J. Michael Straczynski Takes on Forbidden Planet

October 31, 2008

J. Michael Straczynski, the writer of the Clint Eastwood-directed Changeling, is penning a long-in-the-works update of sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet for Warner Bros. Joel Silver is producing via Silver Pictures.

Released in 1956, "Planet" told the tale of an expedition sent from Earth to check on a colony of scientists on a far-off planet. They find two members, a man who has found alien technology that doubled his intellect, Dr. Morbius, and his daughter, both of whom have managed to survive an unseen monster roaming the planet.

The movie, directed by Fred Wilcox, starred Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis and Leslie Nielsen, but is perhaps best known for the character Robbie the Robot.

Straczynski is better known for his sci-fi and comic book work. He created TV shows "Babylon 5" and "Jeremiah," and worked on Ninja Assassin for Silver and the Wachowski Brothers.

I just saw this for the first time recently, and i really dont want there to be a remake, because its going to be just as out of control as TDTESS with Keanu. It's rustic appeal is what made it such a great movie! Damn you Hollywood!

Will Leslie Neilsen have a cameo in this? Didn't he play the Captain in the original?

Damn.

It was only a matter of time before they were going to get around to this one. Damn it.

"Forbidden Planet" kicks ass. We don't need this remake, especially from Joel Silver.

Wish Robby the Robot could like, beat the $### out of Joel Sliver. The guy annoys me.

Actually, they have remade Casablanca and Gone With the Wind.
Casablanca was a tv series remake with David Soul in the 80's. GWTW was redone with different titles over the years and has had SCARLET made into a mini-series.
As long as they don't totally screw it up I guess we will have to live with remakes. At least this one 50 years old--they are remaking THE LAST DRAGON-with Sam Jackson and it is only 20 years old.

This project has been on the remake road for a while. Stan Winston had even done some on it years ago before the project was cancelled. Irvin Kershner was set to direct. Apparently it has been resurrected.

I'm with him... stop re-makeing these classiscs! They are great because of the time they were made in.

Not that I don't doubt Straczynski's talent at all but why do they have to remake such classics? The movie was so good because in certain elements it was ahead of it's own and can stand on it's own.......to this day it is still a gret film to watch. Don't let this one go the way of War Of The Worlds or The Day The Earth Stood Still.
