Brandon Routh on a Darker Superman

IESB.net caught up with Superman Returns star Brandon Routh, who has a role in Kevin Smith's Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and asked about the "Dylan Dog" comic book adaptation Dead of Night (Routh says they start filming in mid-January) and possibly making the next "Superman" film darker. Here's a clip on the latter:

I don't know, I don't think the character necessarily has to be darker, I think he is kind of dark in a sense, emotional dark, in Superman Returns, and the movie as a whole was slightly dark, they could have had more prowess in it I suppose, and I think that's one thing that can be done in the sequel, so I don't know how much darker you want to make it necessarily. You make the stakes higher, you make the villain darker, I think that's a way to do it. But I don't think Superman himself needs to be darker. He definitely has to struggle, how does Superman be a part of the world? And does he have to make sacrifices to be a part of that world? To fit in and what purpose does he really play in the world? Those are all kind of dark places to explore. But, I don't think Superman should ever be dark and brooding, that's not is nature. And that's now what people what to see. Like Brainiac or something like that, a situation when the villain is...

Even with the terrible 'Incredible Hulk' re-boot idea, hopefully Brandon Routh will stay. The studios don't get it, though. Being like 'The Dark Knight' isn't a matter of "darkness," it's simply a matter of being grounded in reality!

Honestly, I think they need to leave Superman alone for a while; until they figure out exactly what they want to do, who will play the role and what the storyline is going to be. DC is just rushing to get stuff out as soon as Marvel is and it just isn't going to work like that. Superman returns was a huge bust!

what will happen with routh if mark millars pitch of a complete reboot is picked up

millar's "pitch" will probably never happen. i think wb would rather see if singer and co and get it right this time. i think brandon really knows the character, or atleast he knows that he isn't a dark character, but his villains could/should be.

i remember back when returns came out and it was being received poorly he said something like he wanted to do an origin story and restart the franchise instead of revisit donnerverse.

dead of night sound like it could be like 30 days of night, lame but not completely horrible.

The point is making it a good story. I don't believe it has anything to do with being dark or being grounded in reality. They're just good, well-made movies that went in a good direction. That kind of movement needs to be alligned with the Superman movies. But not in the same way. Frankly, being grounded in reality is one of the new Batman's faults, in my opinion. They're great movies, for sure, but they lack a certain epicness and at times they feel awkward because the dialogue, which often veers to the less 'real' comic text, feels out of place.
In any case, Superman definately needs a new vision. But its OWN vision, not a knock-off.

Doesn't have to be dark to be better, it just has to be well-done and one other thing, get rid of the ole i can't tell the difference between clark kent and superman cuz of some stupid pair of glasses, Your insulting the audience and the new generation who just looks at that as silly, and yes Superman has to be more bad-ass, and stop lookin for the rated-PG crowd, learn from the dark knight, Remember this generation is decensortized, Cartoons are not the same, kids could watch someone get there heads blown off on tv and could cares less. Give us a Superman that would have us feeling as if we just got off a 120 min ride rollercoaster with no safety precautions, We need a director that thinks about making art not money.
