Gaiman Taking Graveyard to the Big Screen

MTV talked to Neil Gaiman, who says that he is producing a live-action adaptation of his new New York Times best-seller "The Graveyard Book," illustrated by Dave McKean. The following is a description of the book:

Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy.

He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead.

There are dangers and adventures in the graveyard for a boy-an ancient Indigo Man beneath the hill, a gateway to a desert leading to an abandoned city of ghouls, the strange and terrible menace of the Sleer.

But if Bod leaves the graveyard, then he will come under attack from the man Jack—who has already killed Bod's family...

Gaiman says he took the project to special effects house Framestore (The Dark Knight). "They want to start making films, and start producing their own films," Gaiman said, "...I think we’re actual going to stick with where the book is written and film that. And I think part of the idea is that they know they can also do the special effects cheaply."

That will be a big issue for this film, considering most of the characters are "dead, or werewolves, or ghouls, or something else mysterious," Gaiman added.

Argh. It's killing me. I love Gaiman and all his work, I am happy to see anything he has done translated to the big screen but more then anything else, I'm dying to see Neverwhere get the care and attention it deserves. Unique in that it was a TV miniseries before it was a book, the expanded novel features some incredible depth of imagination that just wasn't possible on the BBC at the time and a Comic Book version took the imagery to new heights, so I think it's time he finally made the push to see this remarkable story fleshed out into a feature length film.

Rumor was, about a year ago, that David Slade, director of 30 days of Night was attached to film it but after the strike not another word has been heard on the subject.

Oh well... Good luck to Neil and the team bring Bod and friends to life... Or uhh... Un-life?

Neil Gaiman is the Ray Bradbury of the 21st Century, and has proved it beyond all question with The Graveyard Book. I'm sure this movie will be a hit - something Ray Bradbury himself would line up for on opening night to watch.

I've never read any of Gaiman's work, but it looks interesting enough to check out the book.

I hope they do a big screen version of Neverware, that would be pretty cool. The TV show was ok, but left wanting. This one sounds good though too...Also, American Gods would be a cool movie too.
