Update: Josh Brolin is Jonah Hex?

October 9, 2008

Hollywood Elsewhere reports that Josh Brolin, who can be seen in next week's W., has signed on to star in Warner Bros. Pictures' Jonah Hex. This has yet to be confirmed by the studio, so stay tuned.

From Crank writers/directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, the film is based on the DC Comics title in which Hex, known for having the right side of his face disfigured and wearing a Confederate army uniform, was a rough-and-tumble gunslinger and part-time bounty hunter whose adventures always ended in blood.

"Jonah Hex," created by by writer John Albano and artist Tony DeZuniga, first appeared in the early 1970s in the issues of "All-Star Western" before graduating to his own series in 1977 that ran for about 10 years. A new series was launched in 2005. The character also had a run in the 1990s that combined the Western genre with supernatural elements.

UPDATE: Variety has confirmed the casting.

I was just reading about these comics yesterday. Brolin sounds like a great choice after seeing his cowboy ways in "No Country". I'm definitely interested in this now.

He could pull it off. As long as they stick to the western theme and not that crap where he gets stuck in the future. On the other hand, stop making comic book movies.

I think Josh Brolin is a great actor, but no matter what I watch him in I can't stop picturing him peddling around on a little girl's bike as Brand, the older brother in "The Goonies." :-)

Tom Jane? He had a comic book movie, let's give Josh Brolin a shot he might be really good or he might be Nicholas Cage. We won't know till we see the film.

Dont forget Brolin was part of an ensemble in the western tv show Young Riders...so i think Brolin is a good fit for this film.

And funny everyone gets nostalgic about Brolin in goonies, am i the only one who remembers him in Thrashin?

This is cool news to me. i knew of the jonah hex character from the late 80's, but never really understood his reason for living. The batman animated series in the 90's, had an episode about jonah hex.
There was a connection to a crime that happened in the old west and in gotham city's present. Batman and Robin were chasing down ra's al ghul for something he stole or something dangerous.
But it would not be the first time that ra's al ghul had been hunted down. Jonah Hex didn't like him either.
Jonah Hex had more screen time than any of the other character on the episode.
To see him in his own movie would be good. Good for DC in putting more characters on the big screen, but to see a genre that hasn't had any projects in a while, the ol' fashioned western.

Why don't they just make a series based on King's THE DARK TOWER novels? It would be far more entertaining and epic.
