David Cronenberg Directing The Matarese Circle

David Cronenberg is in negotiations to direct political thriller The Matarese Circle for MGM, reports Variety.

Denzel Washington is attached to star in the film, which is based on a Robert Ludlum novel.

Set against the backdrop of the Cold War, the book revolves around two men — one American, one Soviet — who must cooperate in order to foil a sinister plot to topple the world's governments.

Writing partners Michael Brandt and Derek Haas (3:10 to Yuma) wrote the adaptation.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing alongside Nick Wechsler and Jeffrey Weiner.

MGM is eyeing a spring start date.

Hmm...this sounds kind of a weird choice, but something im eager to see how it turns out. Im also looking forward to Robert Ludlum’s The Sigma Protocol from Universal

I guess Cronenberg has bills to pay or a project he wants funded. Who knows? Maybe Cronenberg will make Denzel Washington do some acting for his paycheck? The guy is actually a good actor when he chooses to put in the effort and Cronenberg is excellent at directing actors. Could be worth seeing. Has Cronenberg ever really made a bad movie?

This is Ludlum's best book. Strange choice of director but History of Violence and Eastern Promises makes it seem like hes a good choice. Do we get Viggo Mortenson too?

Cronenberg has been on a roll with his last 2 movies, so with an a-list lineup like washington and cronenberg, it should be interesting to see, definitly something to keep an eye on, considering history of violence and eastern promises r 2 of the most underated recent movies around

Cronenberg's a genius, I don't even have to think about seeing this. Does anyone know if there's any good violence in the book that he can take advantage of? And what a cool idea to team him up with Denzel. With this, in addition to the post-apocalyptic Hughes Brothers movie he has coming up and his 4th teaming with Tony Scott, Denzel seems to be going on a roll himself.

Sounds like he's doing one of his money films... but I'm ok with that, as those are always great too.

It is funny that people are surprised though. Granted, he hasn't done a studio film since the 80s, but he's said before how he has to do them in order to fund the ones he really wants.

Which is why i like him so much. He has integrity, but isn't stupid about it.

Cronenberg is the dude!!!! Eastern Promises was one of my favorite movies of 2007, although I wish they could had Vigo wear a towel during that brutal fight scene in the bath house.
