Overture Films will produce and distribute The Crazies, a remake of the 1973 George Romero film, reports Variety.

The update will be directed by Breck Eisner from a script by Ray Wright and Scott Kosar. Michael Aguilar and Dean Georgaris will produce; Romero will serve as executive producer.

Production is set to begin early next year.

The Crazies revolves around people in a small Kansas town who are beset by a virus that causes insanity and death after a mysterious toxin contaminates the local water supply.

The project was previously set up at Rogue Pictures and Paramount.

Poor George A. Romero. Seems like everything he has done is being remade which is pretty much the same for EVERY horror movie in the past 10-50 years. Are they seriously trying to remake everything?

The thing is they have to keep it away from 28 days later. I've seen (and have the DVD to) the original and they should not make them "rabid" like 28 days, because i can see them easily doing this especialy since the success of it. The best part of the Crazies, in my opinion, was the scene where the soldiers try to evacuate a farmhouse and find an old woman sewing and they keep trying to get her attention, they finally decide to pick her up and she suddenly yet casually stabs one of them in the neck with the needle then goes back to sewing. That scene got me more than anything else because just the idea is so creepy.

At least, as executive producer, George will probably make more money from this than from all the movies he actually directed. God help us when someone "genius" decides to remake Knightriders...

Remakes remakes remakes...

If all of our culture is this cyclical, then humanity's evolution is doomed.

rerun's are now the entertainment of choice. But really can they come up a diferent perspective, look at dawn of the dead that one for me is the best Romero remake ever. Love the camera ending. But a least they could change the title.
