Kenneth Branagh to Direct Thor!

Kenneth Branagh is negotiating to direct Thor for Marvel Studios, reports Variety. The comic book adaptation is scheduled for a July 16, 2010 release.

Branagh is the latest in a string of directors -- such as Jon Favreau (Iron Man), Christopher Nolan (the Batman franchise) and Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) -- with arthouse roots taking on big-budget comic book fare.

Marvel will set a distributor for Thor shortly.

Thor, written by Mark Protosevich, follows disabled medical student Donald Blake, who has an alter ego as the hammer-wielding Norse god Thor.

This will bomb as badly as Ghost Rider, I can see it now. Never been a big fan of Thor, and I'm not sure how they'll work it into a modern, more realistic movie.

How do you cast someone to play a God? Who ever does direct this has a **** load of work ahead of them. I want to see this as an Asgard based film which leads Thor to the mortal plane.

This is AWESOME news. Unfortunately, not everyone will live Kenneth Branagh, but he is AWESOME and a Thor directed by him will not only be great, it could be funny, it could be all kinds of things. Most of all, it won't be the bore-fest that was Iron Man. I'll take it...

Kind of Random but this makes so much sense...
With this choice of director, it seems like they are setting this in an elevated dramatical world. I'd say it'll be almost Shakesperian which is an interesting take on this subject matter. Hey, I'm excited, I like Baranagh.

This is an origin or sorts set mostly in Asgard.

Also, in reference to the article: they already have a distributor. They have a agreement that X-number of self-produced Marvel Studios films will be distributed by Paramount, save for the Hulk films. That was announced a long time ago.

In relation to the comments: Marvel is self producing this. You don't have to worry about this being another Ghost Rider.
