Soderbergh, Douglas Eye Liberace Biopic

Steven Soderbergh is in the early stages of developing a biopic about Liberace for Warner Bros., which he will direct.

Variety says the filmmaker has drafted his Traffic star Michael Douglas to play the flamboyant pianist.

Richard LaGravanese is writing the script, and Jerry Weintraub will produce.

Soderbergh is in discussions with Matt Damon to play Scott Thorson, who sued Liberace in 1982 for $113 million in palimony, claiming he was the entertainer's companion for five years. Even though Liberace never wavered from career-long denials that he was gay, Thorson reportedly settled for $95,000 in 1986.

Liberace died in 1987 of complications from AIDS at age 67.

Could be just the career revival Michael Douglas needs. He hasn't been in a good movie since Traffic. Hmmm...

Michael Douglas as Liberace? I'm sorry I just don't see it. His career can not be that far down the toilet. If it is, it's time to flush Michael.

I'm sure some people will be entirely clueless about the flamboyant pianist/showman -- I can hear it: "Who's Libber-Ace?". That said, there were two competing TV-movies in 1988 about Lib-Er-Ah-Chee that respectively starred Andrew Robinson and Victor Garber. I dunno if Michael Douglas is right for the part, though. I imagine the biopic would cover a wide range of Liberace's life, so go younger: Cast Leonardo DiCaprio to allow the span from younger to older (see if Leo can *camp* it up, eh?).
