Wes Anderson to Write My Best Friend

Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment have set Wes Anderson to write My Best Friend, a remake of the 2006 Patrice Leconte-directed French comedy Mon meilleur ami. Variety says Anderson is also eyeing the project as a directing vehicle.

Brian Grazer and Agnes Mentre will produce. Rosalie Swedlin will be executive producer.

The French film starred Daniel Auteuil as a cranky antiques dealer who learns at a dinner with his closest acquaintances that none of them really like him because of his harsh manner and selfishness. When his business partner bets him a valuable vase that he can't produce a best friend, the dealer tries to get an amiable cab driver to pose as his buddy.

Anderson just completed directing an animated adaptation of Roald Dahl novel The Fantastic Mr. Fox with 20th Century Fox Animation.

Yay! I love Wes Anderson and I'm looking forward to how he'll try his hand at a remake/adaptation - and a comedy, nonetheless. I think for the most part his films are funny but separate from the label "comedy."

The plot also sounds a bit like a Wes Anderson film.

Woohoo! I'm really excited about this...

Anderson must have seen the French movie
and seen Bill Murray playing the lead.
Seems like a great fit for Murray, given
his onscreen and reportedly offscreen
cantankerous and difficult behavior.

Seems like another interesting move for Anderson after the animated Fantastic Mr. Fox which is his first feature not based on an original script either written or co-written by himself. Mon meilleur ami is a pretty funny flick. Another recent French comedy that I think is ripe for an American re-make(that is if it's done right) is The Valet.

At first, I was skeptical, being a huge Wes fan, that he was doing something that didn't come out of his own head. I've never seen the original, but from the synopsis, it sounds like a worthy Anderson/Murray re-team.

Not only does this storyline fit in line with all of Wes' work, but Wes is also very influenced by french film. I.E. Jean Renoir. So it was only inevitable for Anderson to make a french film. I for one hope he makes the entire thing in french with subtitles. I mean, everyone knows Custer died at Little Bighorn. What this book presupposes is, maybe he didn't?

I actually seen the original film @ the IFC theater here in NYC... I hope this is just as good; with Wes at the helm I believe it will
