Julie Andrews to Star in Tooth Fairy

September 9, 2008

Julie Andrews will join Dwayne Johnson and Ashley Judd in Fox's family comedy Tooth Fairy, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Also on board are "Extras" star Stephen Merchant, who also co-created "The Office," and pro skateboarder Ryan Sheckler (MTV's "Life of Ryan").

The film centers on Derek Thompson (Johnson), a minor-league hockey player whose nickname is the Tooth Fairy because of his ability to knock out opposing players' teeth. Judd plays his girlfriend.

When he discourages a youngster's hope, Derek is ordered to one week's hard labor as a real tooth fairy, complete with wings, magic wand and frilly tutu. Along the way, he rediscovers his forgotten dreams.

Andrews will play Lily, a high-ranking, acerbic supervisor with the Tooth Fairy Department charged with overseeing Derek's stint as a tooth fairy.

Filming will begin in October in Vancouver with Michael Lembeck directing a script by Lowell Ganz & Babaloo Mandel and Joshua Sternin & Jeffrey Ventimilia.

Why is "The Rock" doing these stupid cheesy comedies, he should be doing great action movies like he did in "The Rundown(Welcome to the jungle)" & "Walking tall"

I see no problem with him doing family roles. I simply avoid watching them, and let it up for the kids. Make his big bucks and retire early.

Why not...he has the chops for family-comedy. And he's doing the remake of "Escape to Witch Mountain," which isn't quite so "kiddy" in tone. And of course the remake of "Get Smart" makes his presence known. Those who don't want to see him in those roles stay home, and those who don't mind can enjoy his company at the movies. When he's ready to do some action, he'll be waiting in the wings...when the right script comes along that he would enjoy.

I agree, Dwayne Johnson needs to go back to The Rock. I REALLY know this guy's career when he debuted as Rocky Maivia in the then-WWF(now WWE). He has really come a long way since then. The Scorpion King showed his prowess for action. The Rundown, we saw him really progress into a little comedy. Walking Tall was a very good action film, but all the actors(including The Rock) in that some seemed very one-dimensional and stale. Never seen Be Cool. Doom like Walking Tall, was good, but again like Walking Tall had very wooden performances from everyone.

The Rock for me rebounded with The Game Plan. Hopefully Get Smart turns out to be a good movie, as I am starting to like Steve Carell's work, as well as Anne Hathaway.

I am not sure about Escape to Witch Mountain as I HATED the original. The Tooth Fairy in which they are stating The Rock will be wearing wings, a tiara and a tutu brings back memories of Hulk Hogan wearing a dress in the disturbing Mr. Nanny. Tooth Fairy though has Ashley Judd and Julie Andrews, two of the most prolific actors for their generation.

Sounds interesting, there is nothing wrong with family flicks that is what the majorety of the movie going audience is- either families or friends. So dont bash something before you know. But who am I talking to it - I forgot, happens all the time on this website.

Let the guy do what he wants...he is good at family comedy and he does well as an action hero. I would like to know the status of projects such as Spy Hunter and the Hawaiian king movie he was originally supppose to do. Oh, by the way...Julie Andrews-Prolific-Yes...Ashley Judd-Prolific-NO...HOT-YES.
