Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace will write The Last Pharoah, a Columbia Pictures drama crafted as a vehicle for Will Smith to play Taharqa, the pharaoh who battled Assyrian invaders in ancient Egypt.

Smith, James Lassiter and Ken Stovitz will produce for Overbrook Entertainment.

Variety says Smith, who has long wanted to play the pharaoh, brought Wallace the Taharqa story.

The film will focus on his battles with Assyrian leader Esarhaddon starting in 677 B.C.

i'm unsure about this movie. Braveheart was perfection, but Will Smith? Not sure yet. Why not Denzel? He's great!! I mean, i like Will Smith and all, but i'm just not sure if i buy him in a period piece. But i guess there's only one way to find out!

Sounds interesting. Might be nice to see an ancient Egypt movie for once.

Will Smith will be good this this as he usually is in flicks but I will say that I will be the first to laugh the moment he lets out patent movie scream/screetch/ war cry. It always sounds like someone has his testees in a vyse grip.

very interesting idea. it will be very different for Will Smith, but I have been impressed with his film work (except for Wild Wild West). It would be very interesting to see him tackle something that won't have funny one-liners. He as the potential to do dramatic work, and hopefully with a talented screenwriter, we won't see something that feels forced.

I can see him pulling it off. Just picture his performance on I Am Legend on a larger scale.

I think I am Legend was his greatest performance to date. Not necessarily his best movie but he really tested his acting chops on this one and I think he can pull off the being the Pharoah

pursuit of happiness was his best " acting movie: to date.. I am legend was just like every other movie with will smith in it. he rocked it.. but it was nothing special.

"Must Miss!" Smith can't portray any serious role. He is just a show-off and always wants to present himself as the coolest guy and make tons of money. I Robot and I am Legend were a disgrace... Nevermind what he plays - You never see the character - it's alwas just Will Smith...

I think he meant that Will Smith's acting in that was the best out of his films. Not that it was his best movie.

Anyways, Will Smith a pharaoh? I donno much, but since when were pharaohs black? I can't imagine Smith in a period piece at any rate... he's a great actor, and I love his work to death, but I can't imagine him pulling this off with his like perfectly toned body in a period piece... if he pulls this off I'll admit that there is nothing, literally nothing, that he can't act in. Hell, even send him into orbit to destroy a ship and he'll make that good... oh wait...
