Harold Ramis on Ghostbusters 3

September 7, 2008

Last week, it was announced that "The Office" co-executive producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky were hired by Columbia Pictures to write a script for Ghostbusters 3, but the question remained whether Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson will be back.

Chicago Tribune's Pop Machine received an e-mail from Ramis explaining the situation:

"yes, columbia is developing a script for GB3 with my [Year One] writing partners, gene stupnitsky and lee eisenberg. judd apatow is co-producing [Year One] and has made several other films for sony, so of course the studio is hoping to tap into some of the same acting talent. aykroyd, ivan reitman and i are consulting at this point, and according to dan, bill murray is willing to be involved on some level. he did record his dialogue for the new ghostbusters video game, as did danny and i, and ernie hudson. the concept is that the old ghostbusters would appear in the film in some mentor capacity.

Who do you think should be the new Ghostbusters?

new ghostbusters? no way... i mean im all for a great film with Ramis and the rest of the cast consulting, but come on, i would not want to see them replaced. I dont know if im in the minority here but I love the original cast too much...

Although the original guys were perfect, it would be pretty cool to get some great new guys for it, like some from the Apatow gang. There was a rumor a while back about Steve Carrel, Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd being it which would be a really cool combo. Oh well either way it should be pretty cool.

@ what: That's what everyone said about the Batman series. The new one's didn't fail, did they? ;)

New cast doesn't always mean it'll suck.

I would love if they used the Apatow gang in Ghostbusters 3. Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Craig Robinson, Michael Cera, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, or Bill Hader. I can see Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Craig Robinson, and Bill Hader as the new Ghostbusters.

I really like the idea of Rogen and Paul Rudd being 2 of the new ones. Toss in Vince Vaughn in a role similar to Murray's Dr Venkman and you have gold.

Bill Hader, Seth Rogen, Craig Robinson, Jonah Hill, and maybe Paul Rudd. If Apatow is involved that is very likely. I wish I could star in this movie!

The first GB is my all-time favorite movie... it'd be a tough pill to swallow seeing the main 4 replaced by anybody at all. I'd rather see the guys a bit oldie and moldie than replaced by anyone like Rogen or Hill. Just shove a pencil through MY head right now if that would be the case. I agree that the main cast cannot be replaced. As much as a new story involving my favorite franchise sounds enticing, I have little faith that it can be pulled off well without completely ruining it. Plus there's too much of a chance that the tone will be too silly or different from the original.

Hollywood seems to just be grasping blindly at franchises to capitalize on and ruin lately (all this "let's make all our movies dark now since Dark Knight did so well" mentality is an example of ignorantly trying to simplify a successful concept just to cash in). I love Ghostbusters. I love The Office... but this definitely just really worries me... :~/
