Mark Millar on Wanted 2... and 3

Mark Millar talked to Newsarama about Universal Pictures making a Wanted 2 and possibly Wanted 3.

The first film, based on Millar's graphic novel, was directed by Timur Bekmambetov and stars James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman, Terence Stamp, Thomas Kretschmann, Common and Angelina Jolie. It has earned $258.3 million worldwide.

Millar says he was approached right after the premiere by producer Mark Platt about his thoughts on continuing the story:

"What I will be doing is providing them with a very small amount of stuff for a story, and that will be used as a basic story that they can build from. It will be a small outline that can possibly be picked apart and not used – but it will be something exclusively for the second film, and no one will ever really see it."

Given that the film version of the story differs from the comic book version in a number of ways (some quite substantial) Millar's outline will be set in the film's continuity, but will reach back to the comics. "It will be some of the stuff that we didn't utilize from the first book for the movie – like chapters three and four – there will be some stuff from that, so in the loosest sense it will be based on the book, but only very little," Millar said.

F Mark Millar he sold his soul for $$$. Wanted was the best graphic novel I've ever read (yes even better than Watchmen) n he didn't have the balls 2 make sure it was faithfully adapted. Now THAT was what should of been a movie. No sequel nor trilogy. Just a movie that would've told a story from the super-villains point of view...maybe 1 day someone will reboot Wanted and give it the Hulk or Batman Begins treatment. Y'know the 1 close to the source material.

This movie was cool, but would have been SO much better had they actually used the original story from the book.

I too agree Wanted would have been so much better if it had beed taken from the comic. Sadly, that is not the world in which we live. I will give it the benefit of the doubt seeing that Millar at least has a little say in story direction.

I agree, better than Watchmen might be a little too much credit.

Ha, Millar's gonna write a new story to continue on from the movie? There was NO STORY in the first one!! All it had going was some Night Watch-esque action ideas adapted for characters with guns. Throw in a few funny lines and you have WANTED.

88% of the movie had nothing to do with the comic. What did they do read some random page and start writting crap from the sky?

A lot of people (mainly Dante) need to realize that "Wanted" could NEVER be made into a 100% faithful story. Do I really need to spell it out? A dead guy who has relations with goats. A guy made of S#*t. A hero who walks around raping celebrities. etc. etc.

And not to mention the idea of a league of supervillians is a little hard to get in the head of non comic book fans.

Yeah, the movie wasn't that great. I don't know why the couldn't stick with the basic storyline with Mr. Richtus staging a coupe inside the frat.

I'm interested to see if they make a sequel though. Where they'll take it.

Dante Payne is so clever, obviously quite smart and very correct. Just by reading his well thought out post, and might I say well written, I realized how immature I was. Never in 20 years would I have thought of Wanted as a better graphic novel over the overated Watchemen.

It's people like Dante that aren't afraid to tell the world how they feel without fear. I can tell that he's the kind of person that would back up his words and insults. Even if that person was right in front of him he would still say it how it is.

If you're not smart enough to understand that I'm being sarcastic, well you might not belong here.
