Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM) has signed Vadim Perelman (House of Sand and Fog) to direct Poltergeist.

Cale Boyter, Executive Vice President, Production and Luke Ryan, Vice President, Production, are overseeing the project for MGM.

"We are excited to have Vadim direct 'Poltergeist,' a title which already has a built-in movie-going audience," said Boyter. "With his established track record, we look forward to having him lead the creative direction on this new character-based horror project that will utilize the original film as a jumping off point."

Currently directing and executive producing "Ice," a drama pilot for the AMC cable network, Perelman wrote and directed House of Sand and Fog starring Jennifer Connelly and Ben Kingsley, which earned 3 Oscar® nominations in 2004. Recently, Perelman directed The Life Before Her Eyes starring Uma Thurman and Evan Rachel Wood. Prior to his film and television work, Perelman established himself as one of the most sought-after directors of commercials and music videos, responsible for a number of memorable spots for multinational clients.

The original Poltergeist was released by MGM in 1982 and earned 3 Oscar® nominations. The film gained a cult following spawning two sequels Poltergeist II: The Other Side and Poltergeist III, along with a television series "Poltergeist: The Legacy," which aired for 4 seasons on the Showtime network (1996-1999). Juliet Snowden and Stiles White are writing the new Poltergeist script for the studio.

This has got to be the dumbest idea in Hollywood history. Whats next? A remake of E.T.

nvcameron... the dumbest idea in Hollywood history is making a movie about the origin of Facebook.

but remaking this movie is unnecessary and ridiculous, and thats coming from someone who has even seen the original. these remakes need to stop!

I guess this is the closest they will ever come to remaking a Steven Spielberg film (Till he dies of course...) I'm assuming it's sorta common knowledge that Spielberg co-directed parts of this film, uncredited of course. Either way, his style and mark was all over this.

A remake is so unneeded. Remake the sequels, they sucked!

There are so many talented screenwriters in Hollywood and elsewhere with original thoughts, storylines, and scripts. Why keep remaking everything?

I think that if they wanna remake these movies, they should do it to reboot the franchise. Redo the story, change it, an alternate version and then it's own sequels like Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. A re-invention of movies is fine, not remakes! A re-invention of movies like Conan, Flash Gordon and Clash of the Titans sounds good! P.S. Please get a good director like Zack Snyder to direct an epic trilogy of the God of War games and cast perhaps, Gerard Butler as Kratos!!!

I think these remakes are being produced for this new generation of movie goers. I guess the studios feel that they can't appreciate the originals and feel it necessary to do these remakes. I say the hell w/ them, if they can't appreciate them that's their loss. Is it just me or does just about every aspect of entertainment for this generation seem derivative?
Nothing is original.
