Spielberg Still Directing First Tintin

August 27, 2008

Although Brussels' Herge Studios said Tuesday that Peter Jackson was moving into the director's chair for the first Tintin movie, The Hollywood Reporter says both Jackson's and Spielberg's camps insist that Jackson in fact remains attached to direct the sequel, though he will still be a producer on the first.

Steven Spielberg remains committed to directing the first in a planned trilogy for DreamWorks. It will be his next directing effort after this summer's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

In the meantime, Jackson will finish post-production on The Lovely Bones for DreamWorks/Paramount before moving on to co-write the two "Hobbit" movies for New Line and MGM.

The first Tintin feature, written by Stephen Moffat ("Doctor Who"), will be based on two of the books, "The Secret of the Unicorn" and "Red Rackham's Treasure," written by Tintin creator Herge between 1942 and 1944.

The movies will be animated with motion-capture technology and star 18-year-old Thomas Sangster as Tintin and Andy Serkis as his friend Captain Haddock.

Great! Too bad I have zero interest in seeing it. Sounds like another Golden Compass

Tintin is one of the greatest comic book series ever produced, but I can't help but worry that Spielberg will f**k it up

Don't knock a movie that isn't even being filmed yet.

And you're compairing it to the Golden Compass? How? Explain.

jesus, it's spielberg we're talking about here. and no, he's not a hack. when the hell has steven spielberg been a hack? he's produced eagle eye, rightfully directed an excellent 4th indiana jones. jaws, cetk, raiders, empire of the sun, spr, minority report, shindler's list, to name a few. spileberg will never direct a bad film.

I think they've picked a great story to start out on. "Red Rackham's Treasure" was always one of my favorites. And Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock is my happy news of the day.

FYI, "The Unicorn" is the name of a sunken ship. It has nothing to do with actual unicorns if that's why it's being compared to "The Golden Compass." Tintin is more along the lines of Indiana Jones, the Goonies, or even those old Bud Spencer movies.

Though IJ4 was very disappointing, I think Spielberg still knows what he is doing. He directed Munich a few years ago and that was a very good film. I think he will do well with Tintin.

"Speilberg will never direct a bad film."

Wrong. War of the Worlds was terrible.
