The Cast for Spoof Awesomest Maximus

August 26, 2008

The Hollywood Reporter says National Lampoon is moving forward with its next in-house production, National Lampoon's The Legend of Awesomest Maximus, a spoof of sword-and-sandal flicks such as Gladiator, 300 and Troy.

"Mad TV's" Will Sasso will lead a cast that includes Kristanna Loken (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines), Ian Ziering ("Beverly Hills, 90210"), Sophie Monk (Date Movie), Tony Cox (Bad Santa) and Rip Torn (Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story).

The script was written by Jason Burinescu, and Revenge of the Nerds helmer Jeff Kanew will direct.

Dan Farah and Burinescu are also producing. Sasso and Dale Rosenbloom are executive producers.

chessh2036, your dumb and probably only 10. Revenge of the Nerds is one of the funniest movies ever. Should be better than most spoofs theses days. Remember Top Secret, Airplane, Naked Gun or Hot Shots, funny stuff.

Didn't we just see another sword and sandals spoof that also spoofed other random things...Meet the Spartans. This one will probably actually focus on sword and sandal flicks.

These movies get made because they're low budget comedies that can probably make easy money. Nothing much is at risk unlike Halo. Sigh, I too wish Halo was made into a movie but this is not how Hollywood works. The movie's estimated budget was probably 150-200 million. It was considered too big of a risk.

I'm gonna keep an eye out for this one. National Lampoon's has made some great movies. At least it's not the same people as the "Movie!" series. So there is at least reason to have a little faiths. Spoof movies can be great if done correctly.

Like other people said its not like the other crap spoof movies that have been coming out as of late. Those filmmakers should never get behind a camera again. Revenge of the Nerds was great, should be interesting to see how this one turns out. It may be good or it may be crap.

If this is the best Ian Ziering can do then maybe he should go back to the new 90210. Although I think the new 90210 looks fairly banal, it can't be as bad as these spoof movies that are coming out.

The spoof genre use to be a favorite of mine but man it's been painful watching the decline of the genre over the years. How the hell do you go from a comedy masterpiece like Airplane! and The Naked Gun to a comedy disaster like Meet the Spartans? Hell, these movies are so bad that they even make mediocre spoof movies like Wrongfully Accused look damn good by comparison! Ugh!

I agree that continuing to make versions that spoof other movies that people may or may not like is possibly one of the worst things to do to the entertainment industry, that and reality shows and the movie Gigli. How ever to point out that not too many movies made from video games ever get any real popularity and most of the time the movie producers and directors don't share the same concept of the game as anyone else, however, should any video game movie be placed in the hands of someone who actually plays that game, I fear a movie worse than Sharkboy and Lavagirl (pretty ****ing terrible) because they can't see what the majority of movie-goers see a game they can't play so pick and choose and take the time to make the movie good and remember it's not easy to take a concept of the freedom to play a game and give it the boundaries of a movie and make it a good movie.

Sorry, off topic, a positive thing for this movie is that it does not end with the word "Movie" (See Date Movie, Disaster Movie, Superhero Movie, Epic Movie, etc.)

A Gladiator spoof?

If they'd made it eight years ago I might have even looked twice at this story.
