Alex Proyas Helming Jonathan Hoag

August 20, 2008

Phoenix Pictures is developing a feature based on Robert Heinlein's novela "The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag," to be written and directed by Alex Proyas, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Phoenix principals Mike Medavoy, Arnie Messer and Brad Fischer will produce the adaptation, which they describe as a complex psychological thriller with plenty of action as well as some love interest.

The deal with the I, Robot helmer closed several weeks ago, and the project will likely shoot after Proyas finishes Knowing for Summit. The budget for "Jonathan Hoag" will be in the $40 million-$50 million range.

Originally published in 1942, the offbeat tale centers on a man who becomes increasingly disturbed when he realizes he cannot account for his activities during the day, or even what he does for a living. He divulges his problem to the husband-and-wife partners of a private detective agency, and their investigation leads to a series of revelations they could never have fathomed.

This is one of Heinlein's novels that I haven't read. I guess I'll have to look into it. He was a fantastic writer, one of the father's of modern science fiction.

Testify, Spaz! While this wouldn't be my 1st choice of an adaptation, it's better than nuffim'...

It's not a novel; it's a short story - and one of Heinlein's few fantasies. Heinlein was ill-served by the film adaptations of STARSHIP TROOPERS and THE PUPPET MASTERS. Let's hope that this movie is better.

I like Proyas' work. I would be... interested in seeing this.

Oh and I'm nacked.

Sounds cool! I've been really getting into Heinlein in the last couple of years, and I've been enjoying the film adaptations. I appreciate the tack taken on "Troopers," howardbeatman, because it sucessfully captured the book's tone without spending too much time on the recruitment factor, if you get my meaning. Also, I'm not looking forward to ANY take on "Stranger from a Strange Land," because it doesn't seem possible (or worthwhile) to make such a film for mass audiences, being the social/religious polemic that it is. (And, it requires a particularly open mind... not in these Red State/ Blue State days!)

I seem to recall, Jak, that Tom Hanks optioned "Stranger" quite a while back... Fortunately, it hasn't gone anywhere... "Glory Road" could be a hoot to film...and while I'd love to see it, "Number of the Beast" would prove to be a logistical nightmare. (But wouldn't it be cool if some channel like "Skinemax" adapted "Time Enough For Love" [OR "NOTB"] for a multi-part flick...?)

To Jak: the novel STARSHIP TROOPERS is a deliberate satire on giant-bug stories; Paul Verhoeven wanted to make a stereotyped giant-bug movie so he stripped out all the satire (and logic). And the trouble with filming STRANGER has less to do with religion or ideology than it being a very-60's story which has not dated well. But I agree with drasimov that GLORY ROAD would be a hott.
