Katzenberg Planning 3rd Madagascar, 2nd Kung Fu Panda

August 14, 2008

DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg expects at least one additional "Madagascar" sequel after Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and said that the studio, as was previously rumored, has also begun talks aimed at creating a sequel to its summer hit Kung Fu Panda.

Katzenberg said "Escape 2 Africa" is the "second chapter in one story," adding that "there is at least one more chapter. We ultimately want to see the characters make it back to New York."

An announcement about a Kung Fu Panda sequel could come within two months.

"We've started conversations about it, and I think in the next 30 or 60 days, we'll be able to talk completely about that," Katzenberg said.

Kung Fu Panda has earned $560 million worldwide. In 2005, Madagascar took in $530 million globally.

OK so i saw "Madagascar:Escape 2 Africa" on opening night and it was SOLD-OUT!! It was so busy!I luved the movie sooo much, way better then the first which is very unusual with cartoon movies. There was a big part of THE LION KING in it but i didnt really care cause the movie was AWESOME, im actually going again tonite with different frtiends!!!!!!And on opening-night it made $17 million, obviously putting it @ the #1 spot and is expected to gross almost $60 million before the weekend ends!!!!!!!!!!!So i am really happy for MADAGASCAR 3 but i think 2011 is way tooo long to wait!!!!!!!

As for SHREK 4 i am so not excited. The first was good but the 2nd and 3rd were kinda crap, so making "Shrek Goes Fourth" would be a complete disaster!!!!!

Kung Fu Panda was a really good movie but i dont see how there could be a 2nd!!!!!!!

BTW is any1 excited for ICE AGE:DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS ??????I am!The first 2 were soooo good

"As for the Dreamwork/Pixar comparison...Well, Wall-E was the last of the mythical original projects that the team came up with at that first sit down. So, expect more and more sequels from them as well. TS3, Cars 2(seriously, who the f'ck needs a sequel to Cars?!) and, if they have any sense, they'll do a sequel to The Incredibles before they do Cars 3."

You'll notice that they've got seven films planned out between now and 2012--Up, newt, The Bear and the Bow, TS3, John Carter of Mars, Car 2, and 1906. That's two sequels, and TS3 is only because after the Production Hell it's been stuck in since almost being made by Disney they might as well make it. So that's two sequels out of seven films in the next four years. Big woop.

Seeing Lasseter fire 600 employees and turn American Dog into a generic Disney film made me die a little inside, though, I'll admit that.

Please understand that sequels pay for original projects, and that without KFP2 or Madagascar3, you don't get the level of creativity and technological innovation that will drive the industry on projects such as WALL*E
