Justin Marks on Street Fighter and Hack/Slash

Newsarama chatted with screenwriter Justin Marks about two of his upcoming films, the video game adaptation Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li and horror comic book adaptation Hack/Slash. For the former, he says you can expect a more serious version. Here's a clip:

Well the guy who wrote it, Steven E. de Souza was the writer on Die Hard, and directed it [the 1994 Street Fighter movie] too, I think it was just a function of what you see with movies like Batman and Robin opposed to Batman Begins, the creators of the former had a different Batman experience when they were young the 60’s TV show, and now in the Nolen era, the influence are things like Millar’s The Dark Knight Returns, and so that example is taken into the stratosphere. While I'm definitely not comparing Street Fighter to Batman Begins, I grew up with the Street Fighter games, and I don't see them as cheesy or funny, but as serious characters that deserve to be explored in their own right.

Ugh, the least they could have done was cast within nationality. Its so sad that they just WONT do it. Say what you will about it, but at least the original Street Fighter movie did that correctly. Ive seen no production stills, and ive only heard bits about the story. Gotta say Im not liking the Chun-Li focus. I would prefer a split-lead feature about Guile, Ryu and Chun-Li taking on the tournament for different reasons and from different aspects:
Ryu for the tournament and improving his skills
Chun-Li for revenge
Guile as an operative fighting the illegal terrorist backer. Imagine a final fight with Sagat against Ryu in the main hall and Guile and Chun-Li running ahead into the main room only to realize they have to fight Vega and Bison, and then solely Bison against the two of them and holding his own.

That's been done before with Van Damn and we all know where that DVD ended up in a bin at Wal-Mart.
Best film for Street Fighter has to be the anime version Street Fighter 2. Alpha was ok but not great.

Dartfin: Didn't that movie had a Brussels guy as an American, a Native American as a Spaniard, a Hawaiian as a Japanese, and a Korean as Ryu? You fail at comparisons...

Your idea sucks, Dartfin. This movie will probably be ass too, but whatever. The Street Fighter story has the potential to be something truly epic. The angle among Ryu, Ken, Gouken, Akuma and Sagat can translate to something to the proportion of Ridley Scott's Gladiator. Just think, if they wanted to keep it realistic then Ryu's legendary "evil intent" can be treated as a sort of schizophrenia or multiple personality disorder as a result of his sensei's death. Flawed hero, baby. But Hollywood would never take a screenplay from me, huh?

Someone please tell Newsarama that Mark Millar did not write Dark Knight Returns.

It would help if you bloody get a chinese woman for Chun-li as it is. Serious my backside, the idea should of been dumped as soon as the first film came out!
