Columbia Pictures Goes for Maximum Ride

Columbia Pictures has acquired screen rights to "Maximum Ride," the best-selling young adult novel series by James Patterson, says Variety. The studio has hired Don Payne (Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, My Super Ex-Girlfriend) to write the script.

The protagonists are six children who have been genetically altered to be 98% human and 2% bird. The kids, who are bred to fly, escape a lab-rat existence and are then pursued by their scientist creators, who send a pack of part-human part-wolves called Erasers to hunt them down.

Seaside Entertainment's Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul will produce. Patterson will be executive producer.

After producing such Marvel fare as the "Spider-Man," "X-Men" and "Fantastic Four" films as well as Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, Arad has hopes that Maximum Ride can hatch an original superhero franchise, with the elements of alienation and angst that resonate in those spandex-clad movie heroes.

Yeah, I wouldn't be telling ppl that it's gonna be penned by the guy who wrote "FF2" & "My Super Ex-Girlfriend". That's just bad publicity right off the bat.

Agreed. Terrible screen writer tackling VERY youth oriented books. Not a good start. But there's certainly a market for it. I'm almost sure the film will be made...let's follow this one and see what happens

No to both, Dakota & Selena... I've pre-read these books before I let my 8 year old have them. Great series, but if you've read them, neither of these girls fit the bill for Max. Better be someone badass and I have no suggestions on who should get this part or the part of fang. I see this being turned into some crap like the OC wanna be "Never Back Down"... too bad, has potential.

whoever thinks that selena gomez or dakota fanning should play max obviously hasn't read the books. and kristen stewart is just a little too old in my opinion.

I can't wait for the movie. I hope they stay true to the books and i think they need to find some new talant for these films. I am sick of seeing the same people destroy movies that other wise should have been great.
