Shaye, Lynne Take on Asimov's Foundation!

July 29, 2008

New Line Cinema founders-turned-producers Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne have signed on to produce their first project since they received their post-New Line deal at Warner Bros. Pictures, boarding an adaptation of Isaac Asimov's futuristic sci-fi epic "Foundation" that they'll produce through their Unique Features production company.

Warners recently picked up "Foundation," which had been in development at Fox. Vince Gerardis, who had been attached as a producer in the Fox incarnation, will remain on board as a producer for the Warners project with Shaye and Lynne.

"Foundation" is based on Asimov's "Foundation Trilogy," which centers on a society that has figured out how to predict the future based on a method called psychohistory and sets up a foundation devoted to scientific research to protect itself and ensure its survival.

Shaye and Lynne's goal is to adapt the first book for now, and, if it's successful, potentially follow the New Line "Lord of the Rings" template by developing adaptations down the road of the second and third books.

Wow, this has always been brimming with 'Hollywood' potential. Hope they can do it justice. Now if only someone would consider making Arthur C. Clarke's 'Rama' series.

First and foremost, this is NOT a film that can be done in two hours; hell, three hours. In fact, I remember Fox was planning to make The Foundation into two films of its own.

I hope they do justice for this series; it's one of my favorite book series and I'd die happy if a great feature film came out of it.

Hollywood doesn't have a great track record for adapting Asimov's work respectfully....

Oooohhh boy! Warner, wanting to do Asimov....seing how they have had problems with a lot of their productions, especially books or comics adaptation to the big screen, I am not sure this is good news. I worry when they talk of a trilogy when everybody who read those know that there are more books then just three. Would they then begin with Prelude? Or go directly to Foundation?

But all in all, you are right Darknightwatchmen, Hollywood haven't been able to produce adequate adaptation of Asimov's work. I Robot anyone (wasn't bad, but not Asimov).

Adapting Foundation to a film is not going to be easy and certainly not for two hours. The first book is very episodic - with the only recurring character being Hari Seldon himself (and that only as a holigram). The structure of a modern film tends towards a climax where in a series of short stories you have a number of climaxes. Perhaps a better idea would be a mini-series with each story taking up an episode.

This would work better as a six hour (minimum) mini-series. It's been a while since I read the books, but I remember them being more dramatic than action packed. I hope they don't sacrifice story for huge action set pieces.

Is it me or does this film sound like Minority Report?
