SDCC: Dean Koontz Says Odd Thomas Movie in the Works

Novelist Dean Koontz told San Diego Comic-Con attendees on Saturday that he now as a movie script adapted from his book "Odd Thomas" in hand and he's very pleased with the results. Koontz also teased that an unnamed actor has signed on to play the title character, but he clammed up before spilling his identity, much to the chagrin of the panel audience.

Koontz added that after reading the script, which was written by an unnamed screenwriter, he 'fell over' because it was 'so perfect.'

"Odd Thomas" tells the story of the title character – a fry cook whose life flies very low on the societal radar. However, Odd has a gift… the ability to communicate with the dead. The book was published in 2003 and Koontz has since followed it up with three other Odd-centric books. He told Con-goers that the Odd Thomas tales will wrap as a set of seven books.

"I know how it ends," said Koontz. "But I don't know how he gets there yet."

Koontz did not reveal any time table for production of the Odd Thomas movie.

I would have to disagree. I don't think Shia would make a very good Odd. I see Justin Long casting a much better Odd. Also I don't see Zooey as Stormy. If Stormy was portrayed as having an Indian heritage it should show in the actor playing her.

I have gone through every one of these posts and I think that whoever said Dilshad Vadsaria did good for Stormy and whoever said Justin Chatwin for Odd also did good. Jim Sturgess would have been great! He would definitely be a runner up.

I think Zooey would be a terrible choice for Stormy. Nothing against her, but every time I come to a description of Stormy, someone who is ghostly pale with stunning blue eyes...while pretty..is not at all fitting.

For looks, I do agree Dilshad Vadsaria is a better choice. I also like Vanessa Lengies for Stormy

And I'm sure this sounds mean, but most the people suggested for Odd make me shudder. Like Shia Lebeouf...just..no. I'm not entirely sure who I'd pick for Odd, I kinda thought Justin Bartha would fit. Also, Colin Morgan.

Haley Joel Osment = Odd. He saw dead people before, he can see 'em again. Not to mention his acting ability smokes any of the over-hyped pretty boy fluff mentioned on this thread thus far. Shia Labeouf? Who chose this dork? Some teeny dweeb? If you don't want to see this movie ruined, think of it as being an independent affair with real acting talent conveying real human emotion. Not a bunch of stupid, scantilly clad teenagers running around yelling their lines while stuff blows up, aka any Transformers movie. This is not acting. This is running and yelling. Odd demands sensitivity and authenticity in his conveyance. I would even like to see a complete no-name play the part. Skip the big name box office blockbuster crap and keep it human.

Never mind that Topher Grace is a bit older than ODD. He looks younger than his age and has exactly the right mixture of charm, intelligence, sense of good over evil, and self-deprecating humor. Topher IS Odd Thomas.

Shia? Are you kidding me? no way is good enough to play a role like Odd. I can definatley picture Joseph Gordon Levitt playing Odd. I don't who would play Stormy though, no girl seem's perfect enough to fill her shoes. Especially not Zooey, you can tell she's in her 30's, that and she doesn't have olive skin. I just hope they don't ruin the movie by adding a sex scene :p

My college friend is really excited. She loves the series and is waiting for the fourth book. Kayla didn't know there was going to be a movie. Please, get some information for the status of the movie. I plan on reading the series soon.

I agree - NO Shia! yick. Joseph Gordon Levitt would make a good choice for Odd, but Zooey as Stormy? I'd have to ask what people are smoking on that one. Stormy is supposed to be very beautiful - think Jessica Biel. Zooey is barely cute. Too bad Tom Welling isn't younger - he'd have made the perfect Odd!

OMG - I've got it. Matt Dallas would make the perfect Odd Thomas. Think about it!

I agree with Elli's choice of Colin Morgan to play Odd. I can't unsee it now! The back of the guy on the cover for "Odd Hours" even looks like Colin: pale skin, dark hair, ears that stick out. I wonder how good Colin's American accent is.
