SDCC: Dean Koontz Says Odd Thomas Movie in the Works

Novelist Dean Koontz told San Diego Comic-Con attendees on Saturday that he now as a movie script adapted from his book "Odd Thomas" in hand and he's very pleased with the results. Koontz also teased that an unnamed actor has signed on to play the title character, but he clammed up before spilling his identity, much to the chagrin of the panel audience.

Koontz added that after reading the script, which was written by an unnamed screenwriter, he 'fell over' because it was 'so perfect.'

"Odd Thomas" tells the story of the title character – a fry cook whose life flies very low on the societal radar. However, Odd has a gift… the ability to communicate with the dead. The book was published in 2003 and Koontz has since followed it up with three other Odd-centric books. He told Con-goers that the Odd Thomas tales will wrap as a set of seven books.

"I know how it ends," said Koontz. "But I don't know how he gets there yet."

Koontz did not reveal any time table for production of the Odd Thomas movie.

The Odd Thomas series is the only other complete works I have read other than Ann Rice's Vampire Chronicles. Why Dean Koontz does not get the accolades he deserves I will never know, but I feel that is what makes his books so much better. His books always tend to surpass those of S.K., but I find Dean to have a more literal grasp of english. Ever since Odd Thomas, I find his new works to be on a different plane than his previous. The Husband, Velocity, YHBTM, all great works of literature. The only other exception to books I await would be "The Solomon Key" by Dan Brown. I ned DaVinci to have a good followup. And for Odd, I think using an unknown, non-type casted actor would be great, but since that won't happen... My vote for Odd would have to be Justin Long, from the MAC commercials and Live Free or Die Hard. He looks like how I would see him and is about the right age. For Stormy, that is a very difficult character to try to put to a face, she basically is the shadow Odd stands in in the first book in my opinion, his reason for what he does. Now I see there will be a series of 7 Odd books :) Ooo!

Does anyone else think Justin Chatwin would play a good Odd? Thats who I picutred when I read the books.

I guy he got to play Odd in the webisodes was alright. I wouldn't mind him playing Odd on the big screen.

Three pages into the book the only person I could picture the entire time I was reading was Shia Labeouf. I really hope they don't butcher this as a film this book is perfectly written and can be directly translated into film.

I always pictured Jordana Brewster as Stormy. As far as Odd, that's a tough one. Little Ozzie...Philip Seymour Hoffman?? :)

Zooey Deschanel to me doesn't embody Stormy simply because her skin is milky, pallid, pale. Stormy was described as having olive skin. If Zach Braff played Odd the movie would be a disaster. I'd take Zooey as Stormy and just overlook the details of her skin as long as she could portray Stormy in the way she should be before I'd ever except seeing the goofy "Scrubs" guy as Odd. I'd really love to see this book made into a movie and do it justice. Let's just go ahead and be honest, books are always better than the films to follow. So, I am not expecting the same reaction the book gave me, but to even give me half the awe the book did. I'd be content with that.
