SDCC: Dean Koontz Says Odd Thomas Movie in the Works

Novelist Dean Koontz told San Diego Comic-Con attendees on Saturday that he now as a movie script adapted from his book "Odd Thomas" in hand and he's very pleased with the results. Koontz also teased that an unnamed actor has signed on to play the title character, but he clammed up before spilling his identity, much to the chagrin of the panel audience.

Koontz added that after reading the script, which was written by an unnamed screenwriter, he 'fell over' because it was 'so perfect.'

"Odd Thomas" tells the story of the title character – a fry cook whose life flies very low on the societal radar. However, Odd has a gift… the ability to communicate with the dead. The book was published in 2003 and Koontz has since followed it up with three other Odd-centric books. He told Con-goers that the Odd Thomas tales will wrap as a set of seven books.

"I know how it ends," said Koontz. "But I don't know how he gets there yet."

Koontz did not reveal any time table for production of the Odd Thomas movie.

I love this series of books, by far the best Koontz work I've read so far. I'm about 90% done with brother Odd which I'm about to finish after this, and Odd Times is waiting on my bookshelf...I like the idea of Shia playing Odd, but I highly doubt that will happen. Zach Braff would be interesting as well...I hope they don't F*** up the movie

I am pretty excited about the possibility of an Odd movie. I have read all four and there is another one that I didn't know existed until I found it online. "In Odd We Trust".

Actually, In Odd We Trust is not a book, but a manga. Dean teamed up with Queenie Chan for that one. And that woman is awe inspiring. Her vision of the Pico Mundo gang is off the charts. I know Dean says that he doesn't work well with others, but I hope this team works better than the attempts with the Frankenstein series. Those books were freakin great, but I'm dying to find out what happens to Deucalion, Carson and everyone else.

I agree that Shia would be a perfect Odd Thomas. They share a similar humor and simplicity. I think Zooey Deschanel is too laid back to be Stormy. I don't see the fire. The movie had better get a big release. It's my favorite book. Stop ruining Dean Koontz's books with bad movies!
P.S. Paul Dano is too shy, and a little creepy, to play Odd.

Okay.....I love the books as well and am so thrilled to see so many people that love them just as much! Also, I had always pictured Ed Norton and Rachel Weisz as Odd and Stormy, except that they are both too old, UNFORTUNATELY!!! Now, I do think that Ed Norton could be make-up'd enough to pull off looking the right age. I agree with everyone in thinking Zooey Deschanel would be a good Stormy, but can see where people would think the opposite, I've had a hard time finding someone that I think would be good --- Shannyn Sossaman seems like a good possible candidate. Also, I love Shia LaBeouf, but don't know how comfortable I am with him as odd.....Jim Sturgess would be great ( I love him, love Across the Universe) I also really loved the idea someone had about Joseph Gordon Levitt, he would be a great Odd. And Paul Dano would also be good, but he is such a great character I just hope they pick the right person, they better not have a crummy Odd....I'll protest!!! Also, the idea of Alfonso Cuaron directing seems like a very good one to me. Hmmm.....we shall see...I just hope it's good and soon!!!

I wrote Koontz a letter regarding the "perfect script" and he replied, saying that "Hollywood so hates movies with real values that even the 'perfect' Odd Thomas script is meeting with demands that it be sexed up and slathered with goce."
So my hopes aren't really that high for this movie

I cannot wait for the Odd Thomas movie to come out. Ever since I read Odd Thomas, the first book, I have bought all other Odd Thomas books that have come out. I hope that Dean Koontz sets a date soon for this movie, I know it will be a blockbuster.
