SDCC: Dean Koontz Says Odd Thomas Movie in the Works

Novelist Dean Koontz told San Diego Comic-Con attendees on Saturday that he now as a movie script adapted from his book "Odd Thomas" in hand and he's very pleased with the results. Koontz also teased that an unnamed actor has signed on to play the title character, but he clammed up before spilling his identity, much to the chagrin of the panel audience.

Koontz added that after reading the script, which was written by an unnamed screenwriter, he 'fell over' because it was 'so perfect.'

"Odd Thomas" tells the story of the title character – a fry cook whose life flies very low on the societal radar. However, Odd has a gift… the ability to communicate with the dead. The book was published in 2003 and Koontz has since followed it up with three other Odd-centric books. He told Con-goers that the Odd Thomas tales will wrap as a set of seven books.

"I know how it ends," said Koontz. "But I don't know how he gets there yet."

Koontz did not reveal any time table for production of the Odd Thomas movie.

Shia would be a good choice for Odd.

I disagree (as I say in my article). His personality (and looks) are nothing like Odd. Shia plays more tough guys than your nice Everyman.

Very Much so and he doesn't have that vulnerability that the character needs to be believeable.

I'm a big Koontz fan, but I have no interest in reading this book or seeing this movie. I prefer his horror books like Phantoms and Hideaway

Carlos: You're missing out. Odd Thomas is, by far, Koontz' greatest work. I'd say Watchers comes in second. But OT transcends Koontz from just another big-name author who hauls out average or slightly above-average work numerous times a year (and I, too, am a big Koontz fan).

The Odd Thomas series is by far some of the best reading out there next to Christopher Moore's "Lamb" and Stephen King's "'Salem's Lot". I couldn't put either of those books down until I was done as the Odd Thomas series baooks.

I read the first Odd Thomas book and loved the first 50 pages or so. After that and it got boring, with an ending that was forced and anti-climatic. I'm going to go ahead and give the movie an average yahoo rating of C-. I may not be able to see dead people, but I can still sniff out bad movies even before they come out.

Awesome! Love the Odd series (especially the first, but I've yet to read #4, didn't even know it was out yet).

I too hope it makes it to the big screen.. but even a DVD release will be pleasing.

Finally something decent from Hollywood that won't include comic books joke hero's, 80's cartoon characters, etc.

I think Joseph Gordon Levitt would be great as Odd. Just watch the movie BRICK and you'll see what I mean.
I can't wait for this movie. I love the book series. As someone who comes from a small speck of a town like Odd, I feel that I can really connect with these characters.
I hope the BODACHS are done right and look cool.
