SDCC: Torchwood Star Up for Captain America?

John Barrowman, the star of "Torchwood," was just asked moments ago at the San Diego Comic-Con panel if there was any possibility that he would be playing Captain America in the upcoming feature film.

He smiled and gave the stock answer that he'd love to play the character and that Captain America has always been his favorite comic book superhero. Clearly, though, the notion did not take him by surprise and he ended up admitting there had been discussions with his agents and meetings on that very issue.

What do you think? Though maybe not the star-power that the studio might be looking for, Barrowman certainly fits the bill. We'll bring you more news as it develops.

The First Avenger: Captain America is currently scheduled for a May 6, 2011 release.

No matter what anybody says, sometimes parts like this just need to be played by a new guy. There isn't ANY WELL KNOWN star I can think of that could pull it off. Bale, Jackman, & Rputh were all relative unknowns before they got thier big break as Batman, Wolverine, & Superman.

btw, colca, they did cast a non-brit as bond. Sean Connery, the first Bond, was Scottish. And no, that's not the same as British.

"btw, colca, they did cast a non-brit as bond. Sean Connery, the ***** Bond, was Scottish. And no, that's not the same as British."

Fool, Scottish is still British, Britain includes England, Scotland and Wales, as well as Northern Ireland, so anyone from those countries is British, but obviously someone from Scotland isn't English, but Sean Connery is still British because Scotland is in Britain!

...and Barrowman is great, he'd probably be the thing to draw me into watching the film. Can't see myself desperate to go and see some film with a superhero that's covered in an american flag 8-| but with Barrowman in it, would be worth watching :p

Oops, Chris posted his answer while I was still writing mine and we ended up saying some of the same things. I do want to add that I don't think this movie will be jingoistic or uber-patriotic...if you read the comics, Captain America has never been the kind of guy who just goes along with what his superiors tell him to do. He believes in the idea and the ideals of America, but not necessarily the decisions that the leaders of his country make. Captain America has actually quit a number of times through the years...for a period of time in the 1980s he only called himself "The Captain" and didn't wear his old red, white, and blue costume, but a black colored one. He is shown to be the kind of American that maybe doesn't exist anymore...the very fact that he is taken from the late 1930s, when America was still fairly innocent and there was a stronger moral code for goodness and decency. He is supposed to be a fish out of water, a man from a more classic America living in a world that has drastically changed. So don't think of the character as some gung-ho, yee-ha, "let's go America" kind of guy. He's never been that, and he most likely never will be. If the leader of Alpha Flight can have the Canadian flag be his uniform, and characters like Captain Britain and Union Jack can be draped in their countries colors, then why can't Captain America? Get over your personal politics and try to be a little more open to resolving differences instead of aggravating them.

daniel craig isn't a bad choice i mean he has the look, blond with blue eyes and pretty built, and he could hold his own with the big stars in avengers. dynamite choice. who cares if he isn't american as long as he pulls the part off thats all that matters

I liek the idea of John being Captian America, it sounds like a horrid film for a non-american but John is a great actor and i would pay money to see him give it a go, good luck John.
He was born in Scotland but grew up in America.

I'm amazed at the lack of outrage at the title of this film. It's the stupidest title I've ever seen on a film.

He is a very good actor and Torchwood is a very good show. I am not sure he is right though. He is a little too old I believe, Capt should be a little closer to thirty then 40 and I don't believe he has the build either. And a character such as this should be played by a American.

He's Scottish but grew up in the US, hence the square yank jaw. He'd do a pretty good job as Cap but not sure how he'd look with blond hair.

I love John Barrowman. He'd be a great Captain America.
