SDCC: Torchwood Star Up for Captain America?

John Barrowman, the star of "Torchwood," was just asked moments ago at the San Diego Comic-Con panel if there was any possibility that he would be playing Captain America in the upcoming feature film.

He smiled and gave the stock answer that he'd love to play the character and that Captain America has always been his favorite comic book superhero. Clearly, though, the notion did not take him by surprise and he ended up admitting there had been discussions with his agents and meetings on that very issue.

What do you think? Though maybe not the star-power that the studio might be looking for, Barrowman certainly fits the bill. We'll bring you more news as it develops.

The First Avenger: Captain America is currently scheduled for a May 6, 2011 release.

Alright I've seen Torchwood and I'm not a fan. However, As far as looks and acting ability I think Barrowman could do a great job. BUT I do not think a non-American should be cast as Cap. I am not a GUNG HO, redneck, patriot retard either. I just think that if you are going to go through the effort to make a movie about the hero that embodies the greatest American ideals to the point of obsession. You should honor the spirit of that character and the people who created that character and cast an American.
So unfortunately although i think people like Daniel Craig and Barrowman could do a great job. Marvel should be wise and cast American.
Besides you all know it is that type of casting that will set Batman/DC fanfux off on why this movie will suck so hard.

Captain America can be a bad ass movie but WHY OH WHY get some jabroni A hole to play the part??? What was this guy on? From Dusk Till Dawn 4?

This reminds me of Superman Returns getting Brandon Routh, some no name actor that did a horrible job playing Superman

That's a fair point OsGom made about casting an American for the Captain America part, I mean think about how unsettling it would be to cast a non Brit as Bond. But the only point I'd make is that although Barrowman was born in Scotland, he moved to America as a child and spent most of his life there. He's basically Scottish born but American raised.

And please, why are so many people getting all bothered because he made a couple of B-Movies. Every actor starts out with some lousy jobs. Jackie Earle Haley got his start in the Bad News Bears movies, so is it a mistake to cast him as Rorschach in Watchmen? Take a lok at Tobey Maguire's early roles on IMDb. He got his start on sitcoms like Blossom. How can you base your opinion on someone taking jobs in bad movies so they could eat and pay rent. Watch Torchwood and then form an opinion

I think John would be an amazing Captain America. He has the look, he's a wonderful actor, and he has experience playing a hero (mind you, that's not required).

About Shark Attack 3; He did that for cash he claims, and the people he had to work with were pathetic actors. Besides, it's funny.

I'm not knocking the guy as an actor...but after seeing the dark knight i think Aaron Eckhart would be the perfect fit for the role of Steve Rogers / Captain America. Nuff said!!

I still think Jensnen Ackles would be the perfect Cap't. He is about the right age, and he has the right look. I still think Marvel needs to consider Jensen Ackles. This guy is about 40. In the comics Cap't was born on July 4, 1917. I don't know if Marvel is going to find someone the same age, but also Cap't was like a new recruit. So he would have to be in his 20's or even 30's. If Marvel wants to stay true to it's comics then why don't they find an actor who would fit the profile.

I don't see John's sexual orientation as an issue here. I also don't see the fact he's a Scot an issue. He grew up in Illinois after his father's company relocated the family.

He's got HERO written all over him. He's brilliant as Captain Jack Harkness on both Doctor Who and Torchwood. Whovians and Woodies alike would go nuts if he got the role. He hasn't made a film since Delovely, so I think its definitely his time!

Colca - I appreciate the heads up regarding Barrowman's nationality. That certainly sways my opinion slightly.
Sadly it is apparent from some of the ignorant posts on this site alone that he would unlikely be well received were he to be cast because of his sexual orientation. It would be great if Marvel was the studio make the leap and cast a g-ay man in a lead superhero roll but I don't think it will happen in this film. Too much discrimination in this country.
I think Aaron Eckhart is good for this roll although I also think he is too closely tied to Batman now.
I know Marsden went from Xmen to Superman but I don't necessarily think that was a good thing.
