SDCC: Torchwood Star Up for Captain America?

John Barrowman, the star of "Torchwood," was just asked moments ago at the San Diego Comic-Con panel if there was any possibility that he would be playing Captain America in the upcoming feature film.

He smiled and gave the stock answer that he'd love to play the character and that Captain America has always been his favorite comic book superhero. Clearly, though, the notion did not take him by surprise and he ended up admitting there had been discussions with his agents and meetings on that very issue.

What do you think? Though maybe not the star-power that the studio might be looking for, Barrowman certainly fits the bill. We'll bring you more news as it develops.

The First Avenger: Captain America is currently scheduled for a May 6, 2011 release.

One random question at an unrelated panel passes as news?

What a joke.

To say you need a big name actor is pretty dumb. I mean I'm not even hearing people suggesting actual actors, just "get a big name". That didn't work so well for Catwoman, Batman and Robin, Daredevil. Pick the actor, name or unknown. Are there a lot of people out there that believe Jessica Alba was the BEST actress to play Invisible Woman? And I feel it should be mention that not only were Christopher Reeve and Hugh Jackman unknown, but also, Christian Bale became a big name BECAUSE of Batman Begins. He was sort of known, but not a star at the time. Then you have Tobey Maguire. Nobody really cared who he was before Spider-Man. I also remember about a year ago when everyone was saying Robert Downey Jr was not a big enough name for Iron Man. Sure he was well known, but not an actor anyone would consider a superstar. Barrowman is the best actor I've heard suggested for Captain America yet. If they pick a superstar and he fits the role, that's fine. But what's the sense in saying you need a big name without giving a proper suggestion.

John Barrowman is amazing, he was amazing in Doctor Who and amazing in Torchwood. He would be the perfect person to play Captain America. I was making a list of people who would be good to play Captain America and he was at the top of the list. Give John Barrowman a chance he will not disappoint.

John is an actor - his sexual orientation, boxers or briefs, cereal or toast for breakfast or whatever other prejudices there are out there, really shouldn't enter the equation. The man can act, he looks superb on screen and in person, and he has a huge fan base especially in the UK.

I say he should at least be given a chance if Captain America is the kind of film he'd like to make.

Is it too much to ask to cast an actual american for Captain America? This would be just like casting that British actor to play the president of the United States in the GI Joe movie...Im just saying.
