On Monday, ComingSoon.net had a chance to sit down with filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan to talk about his new apocalyptic thriller The Happening, and while we didn't have a ton of time with the in-demand director, we did get to sneak in a couple questions about his next project M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender.

Some might be familiar with the cartoon that aired on Nickelodeon for three years called "Avatar: The Last Airbender" set in a world that's divided up into elemental factions, two of whom are preparing for war. It's somewhat strange seeing Shyamalan's name attached to the film's working title, but Shyamalan explained why he wanted to do the movie and what he hoped to bring to it. "It was just the story. I just loved the story," he told us. "I loved the characters in the story and I felt like I could be me inside this larger canvas of this very long-form movie. I think it inherently had kind of family issues and serious larger topics--at the center, genocide--all kinds of stuff. Cultural differences at the center. It has Buddhism, Hinduism, things I'm interested in. It does have martial arts in a way that's not bang bang bang, but more about the person mastering yourself and the things that I love. I took martial arts for a long time. A ten-year-old at the center. That point of view felt good, like I could do my thing."

"It will be tough to keep it PG from PG-13," he said about doing a PG family film. "It will be tricky. I don't know how to make a PG movie so that's going to be much harder, because with R, everything was no problem."

When asked about the martial arts from the cartoon and how he planned on handling the action, he responded, "The great thing about it is it's almost like they don't ever really touch each other based in this world. They kind of do a form of manifesting something and then it comes at the other person and they manifest something. It'll be great to do it as extensions of what the characters are feeling, and there'll be much more CG."

Check back soon on our sister site ShockTillYouDrop for our full interview with Night talking about The Happening, which opens on Friday, June 13. The Last Airbender is scheduled for July 2, 2010.

I read in another interview that they are already deep in to pre-production. The production designers are doing sketches of all sorts of stuff, and set construction starts in August! This movie is going to be amazing!

Also, very excited for Friday! The Happening looks like a nice comeback for Night - as well as a departure in sense. Very interesting

This is a weird movie for him to do.

Sounds good but I hope he gets the martial arts aspects of it right. There are indeed characters that "touch" other characters when they fight, although a lot of the time it is also a manifestation of how the character feels. Maybe M Night can make a movie that doesn't disappoint almost everyone that watches it for once.

Oh, ****, YES.

I love Shyamalan's movies, and I was addicted to The Last Airbender from the first episode.

I can't wait!

first does anyone know if this is going to be cgi or acted by real people, it may say it somewhere, i just didn't see it.

And secondly, if he takes this movie, and gives it a g@y-@ss twist at the end like 99% of his movies, I will officially give up on watching adaptions of shows to movie. This franchise has a lot of potential, I just can't help getting a little anxious whenever Shyamalan's attached to anything...

I'd like to see them get really into it and make more than 1 movie... ideally, there would be 4, like the show. One for each element as Ang (?)(the main char) learns each element and progresses on his journey. I was a fan of the show but haven't seen it in a while... I guess there's always the DVDs!

Ok... just checked into the animated series a bit and here are some corrections... Aang (the main char) starts out knowing the Air 'style,' so the movies would be nice as a trilogy (learning water, earth, then fire). And if your wondering if there is really enough for a movie of each 'style,' the movies are about more than just Aang and his 2 friends and their adventures.

Ever since I saw the first couple episodes, I knew it would make a good live action movie!

Sigh, there's only 3 seasons, each for an element he has to learn. Aang is already a master of air bending, when the story begins.

It will be a live action movie. It is a planned Trilogy, each episode delving into a season of the show.

To those who have seen the show, imagine the prospect of the first movie's final battle in the North Temple (end of season 1). That will be amazing if they get it right.
