Emily the Strange is Coming to the Big Screen

May 30, 2008

The Hollywood Reporter says that counterculture icon Emily the Strange is on the road to the big screen, with Dark Horse Entertainment president Mike Richardson coming on board to produce a feature film that would tell the origin of the gothic figure and her four mysterious cats. Skateboarder Rob Reger created the character in the early 1990s.

"Emily's" connection with Richardson comes from the comic book line Dark Horse publishes. The company began publishing the title in 2005, with "Emily the Strange #1: Chairman of the Bored," which was followed by several other popular miniseries.

"Emily herself is very appealing little girl, there's an edge to her," Richardson said. "There is something very alluring to her image; people see it and respond to it immediately."

Richardson, who's been a producer on such films as Hellboy and its upcoming sequel as well as 30 Days of Night, said he and Reger will be looking for a filmmaker who "gets the character."

The project has not yet set-up at a studio, though Universal is a contender as Dark Horse has a first-look deal there. It has not been determined whether the movie will be live-action, animation, or a combination of the two.

In addition to the backstory and her cats, the movie will also have 13 new characters with names like Earwig, Umlaut, McFreeley and Officer Summers. The story forms the basis of an "Emily" young adult novel, which will be published next year by HarperCollins.

Hollywood, spit or swallow? You have just sucked the smallest cock you are ever going to suck. This reeks of desperation. What's next, JTHM the movie? Oh, ****, did I just give them a new idea? Darn me.

Note:
Stop with the remakes. Stop with the prequels. Stop with the sequels. Stop with the "american versions of this japanese film" And STOP adapting comics that do NOT need to be adapted.

You're making money now, but you'll be losing an audience just as quickly. You want to make the big monies? BE FAITHFUL TO THE MATERIAL!

I got an idea Brandon ... stop watching them and whining about it later, unless this is how you get attention. I've seen babies act more mature. Obviously you still watch them, or else how would you know how horrible they really are? Shut your uneducated mouth up.

As for the movie, eh, why not? I'll put it like this ... they greenlit Howard the Duck once, didn't they? Couldn't get MUCH worse ...

Nothing wrong at all with doing properties like Emily. If done right. And sorry, Burton lost his touch a long time ago, it could be very fun. What if someone like Wes Anderson directed it? Wouldn't that be interesting?

barry sonnenfeld sounds a good director for the job. The character of Wednesday in addams family gave me the thought of bringing him into the chair. Hes got a keen eyeand needs a hit on his shoulder.
