Breck Eisner to Direct Flash Gordon

May 20, 2008

Sony's Columbia Pictures is in early talks to acquire the film rights for a big-screen adaptation of Flash Gordon that Breck Eisner would direct and Neal Moritz would produce. Eisner would also executive produce, says The Hollywood Reporter. The trade says:

"Flash" was originally a science fiction newspaper comic strip drawn by Alex Raymond in the 1930s and was created to compete with another sci-fi strip, "Buck Rogers." The strip was first adapted to the screen via Buster Crabbe serials and made into a lavish 1980 film starring Sam Jones but remembered more for its Queen score.

Flash was a sports player who travels to the planet Mongo with his lady love, Dale Arden, and the mad scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov. There, they discover a world ruled by Ming the Merciless and meet strange inhabitants such as the Hawkmen and the Sharkmen.

There are no writers on board the project yet.

Hopefully it'll be better than the show on SciFi.

ANYTHING would be better than that wretched SciFi show. Even following up the 1980's Sam Jones version would be better than that.

I wonder who do the soundtrack. Queen's 1980 soundtrack was the best thing about that film.

All they need now, to make the movie suck even harder, would be Brad Pitt as Flash and that living stick that he's married to, Angelina Joile, to be Dale Arden. How about Morgan Freeman as Ming. Why not? He's in every other movie in the universe.

Hey,if Eisner directs FLASH GORDON the way he made SAHARA, I'm all for it !! SAHARA was a great adventure flick, true to Cussler's vision even though the egocentric author doesn't think so. So,Eisner at the helm of FLASH means the true spirit of Flash Gordon is in good hands. MUCH better then in SciFi hands, which actually
screwed the whole concept up.
Rock & Roll,Eisner, give McConaughey and Zahn a call. They would make a great Flash and Zarkov!

Wasn't Eisner attached to Black Lagoon? Not that I was looking forward to that, but this movie seems like another one that I wont care about.

They gotta stop ruining a classic and just digitally remaster the 80's version...

A big-screen FLASH GORDON in capable hands would be very impressive! And I hope they would cast a genuinely malevolent Emperor Ming, not the Sci-Fi channel's pathetic David Spade lookalike. And use ***rocketships***, not wormholes, to travel to distant planets, eh?
