Gyllenhaal and Arterton Cast in Prince of Persia

May 20, 2008

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Jake Gyllenhaal (who was first rumored by Latino Review) and Gemma Arterton (upcoming Quantum of Solace) will star in Prince of Persa: The Sands of Time, Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films' adaptation of Ubisoft's popular video game. Mike Newell is directing.

In the fantasy adventure, Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a young prince in sixth century Persia who must join forces with Tamina (Arterton), a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

Doug Miro & Carlo Bernard, Jordan Mechner and Boaz Yakin wrote the script, which is based on the many games created by Jordan Mechner.

Bruckheimer is producing, while Mike Stenson, Chad Oman and Patrick McCormick are exec producing.

Production is set to start in July.

I've always thought that one day, all Hollywood actors and actresses will be at least a comic book superhero/villain or a video game character. Adding to that list is Jake. I never thought of him as the actor to be playing the Prince. Just make sure there's a good script and he'll be alright. But I personally believe it would have been better if they took a lesser-known actor to play this--someone who resembles a bit like the character. Still, I'll be first in line to watch this movie.

Good to see they decided to go with a cast that would match the area of the world it takes place in...oh wait.

I hope this works out. Love the games and I like Jack's acting so we will see.

Um - wasn't Farah supposed to be an Indian princess? *rolls eyes* Hollywood really nailed it by casting a white girl as her.

Man, I wonder what Persians will think of this choice. I don't mind Jake, but as Edmund pointed out they should've casted either someone that looks the part (like Antonio Banderas as Zoro) or someone lesser known and have a big actor play a villain to pull in the audiences.

Wow. Such a surprising plot. I'm so happy that the writers who make it don't explore film's full potential.
