Variety reports that John Woo is set to direct 1949, a big budget romance that will start as soon as he has finished his epic Red Cliff.

Based on true events at the end of WWII and the final years of the Chinese Civil War, the $40 million Chinese language film will star Chang Chen and Korea's Song Hye-kyo and Chang Chen. The screenplay was written by Lust, Caution and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon writer Wang Hui-ling.

Filming will begin in December in China and Taiwan with a theatrical release scheduled for December 2009 and the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Looks like a film definitely worth seeing. I haven't seen Moulin Rouge but enjoyed Romeo and Juliet. Good to see some other familiar Australian talent in this film with the likes of Bryan Brown, David Wenham etc. I wouldn't be surprised if a few NZer's played Aussies too. :p

Speaking of which I do hope somebody like say Peter Jackson could make a pure NZ history film. Can't think of anybody better for the job atm.

Oh...My...God! Where's the John Woo that I've come to respect? Whose work is must-have in every guys' movie collection? The answer is: he's gone Ang Lee on us. He better direct an action movie after this, so help me God.

I have seen Hard Boiled and The Killer and I don't think that those movies are better than Face Off or Broken Arrow. John Woo's last great movie was Mi-2 but, after that he sold out and made that stupid Ben Affleck movie and I can't even remember the name. John Woo is a legend who owns the action genre like Tim Burton owns the fantasy genre. I hope John Woo gets back to what he does best.

John Woo sucks at romance since the Romance in MI-2 was the only thing that stunk. He can do great drama & action and he should stick to that. Since most directors: 90% in Hollywood cannot do either.

"I love you too, where's my dinner?"
"Sorry Honey, I forgot!"
"B***H!!", (JEAN CLOWN VAN DUMB PULLS OUT TWO GLOCKS AND PLUGS WIFE)

THE END.
