Update: Spielberg & Jackson to Co-Direct 3rd Tintin?

May 20, 2008

UPDATE: You can now watch highlights from the "Indiana Jones" Cannes press conference online here!

Media outlets caught up with Steven Spielberg at the Cannes Film Festival and got a few interesting quotes out of the Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull director.

Starting with Indy, Spielberg said that he would make another film, "Only if you want more." He added, "That's why we made this Indiana Jones. We'll certainly have our ear to the ground to hear what happens. That'll decide were we go from here."

We certainly don't think money will be an issue, as the movie is expected to make anywhere between $150-175 million in its first five days domestically alone. That's not counting the 61 international markets it will be released in at the same time on Thursday.

But before another "Indiana Jones" movie can start, Spielberg is working on adaptating "Tintin" for the big screen. As was previously announced, he is directed the first Tintin while Peter Jackson is helming the second. But who will sit in the director's chair for the third installment of the trilogy?

"We are going to make three 'Tintin' movies back-to-back," Spielberg said. "I'll direct the first one, Peter will direct the second one. We'll probably co-direct the third one."

I haven't seen "Crystal Skull" yet, but part of me wants closure. From the sounds of it the new Indy flick won't provide that, so that's disappointing. I'm very excited for a new Indy film and glad that Indy 4 was made, but I don't see how it fits with the other 3. The three have a definite arc to them and 4 seems like it will stick out with the updated cinematography and older Indy.

So, I'm mixed on the topic of Indy 5, but simply put I'd love to see more Harrison. Whatever he's in. It's a joy to see him and he's a Hollywood legend and no one else has that sly, smartass humor that's desperately missing today in a (film) world of cynicism.

plainview20 it's really the matter on who cares what you think or want. Just to be curious though, why wouldn't you want one more Indiana Jones film? because your Indy hater? or do you feel this new film is just enough & no need to mess with a classic franchise anymore?

Personally, I wouldn't mind for maybe one more Indiana Jones film (plus it was the original plan by Spielberg & Lucas to have five Indy films from the start when they created Indiana Jones). But it would have to be made within the next three/four years or so... otherwise Harrison Ford will be to old to play the role. The fourth film does leave it open for a fifth film. So, why not have a grand send off of to the historic & legendary character of cinema.

As far Tintin, I really don't know all the details about this project. Not much as been explained on this trilogy other then the basic information. It's really a wait & see matter.

JackAK, i don't think anyone could have put it any better. Shia can screw himself and his overplayd one dimensional character that he is in every freaking thing he's in. I just hope Spielberg had ssome genious idea for him in this movie. I wont mention my thouhgts on Lucas's comments on refocusing the series on Shia.

As regards to the new Indy looking to modern. So I read in Empire Speilberg (not being able to get his original cinematographer from the first 3) got his guy to study the old ways and bar some cg shot has tried to do things the old way (despite that fool Lucas sticking his rabbish mug in).

I have no idea who Tintin is. But Spielberg and Jackson do and that's good enough for me. These guys have yet to disappoint. Their involvement guarantees that the films will be awesome. No idea what they're about, but I'm hyped.
