DreamWorks is bringing a project on the life of legendary pirate Blackbeard to the big screen, reports Variety.

David Franzoni, who wrote Amistad and Gladiator for the studio, will write Blackbeard, which delves into the life of British buccaneer Edward Teach.

Barry Josephson (Enchanted) is producing alongside motivational speaker and former Philadelphia 76ers president/co-owner Pat Croce, who wrote "Pirate Soul," a book that chronicled the golden era of piracy, which spanned 1690-1730.

Here's hoping for a grittier, more realistic take on the genre. Nothing against PotC, but if someone else is going to chime in, it would be nice to see it in more of an adult light.

Yeah I agree. Something more gritty and realistic would be very welcome.

Sounds good.

It's by the same guy who did "Amistad" and "Gladiator"? So we can expect it to win some Oscars but be extremely inaccurate to history? Hahaha! Ah well, as long as it's good.

Looks like they got to it before Disney for Pirates 4. Still, it should be cool!

Looks like this film will determine whether or not the curse of pirate movies (Pirates, Cutthroat Island) is true and the POTC movies were the one exception.

Just heard Pat Croce on local radio. He calls PotC a "cartoon". He cares very much about historic accuracy when it comes to "Pirate-y things". Read his book, "I Feel Great and You Will To!" and you will understand his passion for life and for doing things right.

What's the betting Russell Crowe is a front runner for the lead?
