Buck Rogers is Coming to the Big Screen

Do they, or don't they have the rights? Nu Image/Millennium Films told IGN that no deal is in place yet, but now Variety says that Nu Image/Millennium Films has acquired film rights to "Buck Rogers," and will develop a live-action feature about the venerable pilot who awakens in the 25th Century and battles evil.

IGN also reported that Sin City and The Spirit director Frank Miller was attached to helm the pic, but the company later told them "they are still mulling over director contenders."

Buck Rogers has enjoyed incarnations in books, comic strips, movies, radio and television, a run that began in the 1920s. That included a feature serial from Universal in 1939 that starred Buster Crabbe, and a short-lived NBC series that starred Gil Gerard.

Nu Image/Millennium will search for a studio partner, just the way it did after gaining the movie rights from Paradox Entertainment to "Conan," which is now being developed with Lionsgate.

Short lived? That series was 3 or 4 seasons, hardly shortlived. I think short lived and I think of terrorist Bush's credibility.

Sorry, Thinkforasecond. The show was a feature length movie and 31 episodes. That's about 1 and a half seasons.

I'd love to see how this turns out. Buck is back!

Am I still 6th or did someone beat me to it?

George Lucas always wanted to do Flash Gordon, not Buck Rogers .. they are very similar characters though. :-)

The Gil Gerrard version had two seasons - the original one where he was based on Earth and then the sillier one where he was exploring the galaxy with "hawkman". :-(

wow, nathan fillion, there's an inspired choice. i think he'd fit perfectly in that world. sure, it's just another version of mal, but seriously, who could honestly be tired of that character? (no sarcasm is intended by these remarks...honestly)

Cool

I loved that show when I was a kid. Hope Twiki's in it.

Buck Rogers would kick Flash Gordon in nutts. Although Gordon could get Brian Blessed to bust Rogers up.

A Buck Rogers movie would be awesome. It already has a fan base from the 80's. I remember how much apart of pop culture it was.

Don't make the same mistake the Producers did on the Knight Rider movie that recently came out. The Director or Producer needs to take a look at the Pilot from the 80's. The pilot for Buck Rogers could have almost been good enough for the big screen. It was mature but, still had the fun sci-fi. The show started to get to kiddie as it went into a series and it looked cheaper to.

Don't go the Battle Star Galactica route. The remake is a great show. But, they lost a lot of the original fan base when they turned it into mad max in outer space. It is still a great show but, those who try to take the same risk a second time always fail.

I would go with more high tech and more fantasy like they did with the star wars prequels. Don't forget the romance for the female audience.
