Terminator Salvation Targeting PG-13 Rating

Variety reports that with production starting today on Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, producers at the Halcyon Co. say they aim to deliver a PG-13 movie to Warner Bros. for release on May 22, 2009.

The "Terminator" series is one of the highest-grossing R-rated franchises of all time, with the first three films having grossed more than $1.03 billion worldwide. "The ratings have changed," said Halcyon co-founder and co-CEO Victor Kubicek, a broker-turned-writer-producer. "The PG-13 has increased in intensity."

A family-friendly rating opens many doors, including a "Terminator Salvation" licensing deal for action figures with Playmates Toys.

"Our merchandising program will be the largest to date for 'The Terminator,' " said Halcyon co-founder and co-CEO Derek Anderson, ex-owner of ad agency In the Mix, who adds that he had not discussed the possibility of an R-rating with Warners. "We won't force it. We are carrying on in the tradition of the mythology, with an exciting approach to the action. If we can make a compelling film to reach the widest audience, why wouldn't we do it?"

Halcyon has already launched Halcyon Games to create a "Terminator" game for release at the same time as the movie. "The first three games were all bad," Anderson said. "The core fans are screaming for something fresh; they won't be just playing the movie."

Set in post-apocalyptic 2029, an adult John Connor, played by Christian Bale, leads the war to save humanity from the killing machines. Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin and Moon Bloodgood co-star.

its just sad when marketing is more important then story telling, to anyone who says this doesn't matter, your wrong it does matter, when studios rip apart beloved franchises such as this simply for financial gain, we should all be outraged.

third! wait i screwed that up. why do i have a feeling this movie is gonna seem more like a spin off than an actual continuation of the series.....could it be because t3 sucked and nobody original is gonna be in this movie? i hope we at least get to see the original dude that traveled back in time in the first movie.

they have to do something good to make anyone wanna see it

PG-13??????!!! NO!! The show is bad enough with Lena Heady always on the verge of tears! But a Terminator MOVIE that is PG-13??! Unacceptable! That will totally suck and go against what the first 3 films began! Make it rated R! Who cares about getting the middle school kids there, the majority of people who will see the movie will be over 18 anyway! Do NOT make this PG-13!

There were action figures and video games for T2, so they shouldn't let merchandising be a factor for ratings.

As a extremely big fan of the terminator series. This is a step backward for the movie series, and makes it feel out of place with the rest of the films. Although Terminator 3 may as well of been PG-13. But, I don't really count that movie anymore as apart of the franchise. They're just alienating the core base of these films. Making it PG-13 makes it sound like it's going to be worse than T3. We may have Bale, unfortunately it sounds like he's taking it for the check in between the dark knight and batman 3. This thing better not suck ass, while I may not consider T3 amazing. It better be just as "good".... or I'll just stick to the TV show for my terminator fix. Time will tell when a trailer comes out.

and yes I realize the TV show is like TV-14. But it's a little bit different.

This movie was bad news ever since they hired McG.

I just can't believe it, when a studio decides to do this. I was actually excited about this movie at first because I am a Christian Bale fan, and it is Terminator. But PG-13 oh my god! Seriously! McG, I wouldn't of thought someone like him would direct. But I hope he is smart and realizes that he has to force the R rating or somehow maybe have a DVD of unrated stuff. Because Seriously...a PG-13 Terminator...the world might actually come to an end then. Who has seen a movie with a WAR be rated PG-13 anyway...umm...Saving Private Ryan, Letter to Iwo Jima, and on on...nope not any of the good ones at least I've seen. Or Why can't people learn from Zach Synder motto, if R fits the story then go with it...maybe we should get Synder on this movie now to save it...?

No one has any originality in movies any more or focuses on bringing characters to life ...with small violence in your face mayhem. I would of loved Tarintino just to do this cuz at least he would of made it mayhem like the first T-movie. Like the Dark Knight will be or a list of movies...In my mind some of these studio people need to start watching the movies instead of thinking with money. If they watched Terminator and T2 then they would know what people would want.. seeing how those were the ones everyone liked.

Hopefully, they pull off something close to Iron Man or the Dark Knight if they are doing PG-13 and not an AVP deal, but I doubt it...but they seriously have to do something to make anyone watch this now.

I don't get what the big deal is (about it being PG-13). All three previous films were rated M15+ in Australia (which is often the Aussie equivalent of a PG-13). I seriously doubt it'll make much of a difference. Batman Begins/The Dark Knight are dark films and both are PG-13. Iron Man was a great action film and it was PG-13.

If you're going to be concerned with anything regarding the quality of the film, then worry yourself with the issue of McG directing...

Hollywood has done turned into a bunch of pussies, they are so scared of offending people now and the crazie thing is,that is where a lot of porn flicks are made.Terminator is not supposed to be PG-13.that is bull****.But can't really say anything till trailer comes out so I won't say anything else till then.Still don't change the fact that hollywood is a bunch of pussies though.
