Variety reports that Iron Man earned $33.4 million on Friday domestically, scoring the second-best Friday in history for a non-sequel after the first Spider-Man.

Overseas, the comic book adaptation grossed at least $30 million Wednesday and Thursday.

Factoring in Thursday night shows, the summer's first tentpole has grossed a sizeable $38.5 million domestically in its first one-and-a-half days. The film is playing in 4,105 theaters.

Friday's haul is the third best for the first weekend in May after last year's Spider-Man 3 ($59.8 million), 2002's Spider-Man ($39.4 million) and besting 2003's X2: X-Men United ($31.2 million).

Iron Man should be able to jump the $90 million mark for the three-and-a-half days. In 2002, Spider-Man grossed $114.8 million in its opening weekend. The final three-day weekend for "X2" clocked in at $85.6 million.

It was a great movie. Hopefully it will make enough to warrant a sequel. And I agree with Thomas Batman is a badass.

Nice, hope it keeps making money, it deserves it....

I still think the Dark Knight will make more, mainly because its a sequel....and Batman's badass

uhh yeah Batman is by far gonna be the best movie this summer, that and Indy. Iron Man was alright but we saw all the action in the trailer, there was nothing really new. Good but not great although Robert Downey nailed the part.

I went into Iron Man wanting it to be awesome, but expecting to be disappointed.

I don't know how it did it, but Iron Man blew all of highest expectations away. I eagerly await the sequel. This movie was AWESOME!!!

The Dark Knight is still gonna smoke it though. :P

Why is it that you Dark Knight fan boys can't just compliment anything?

Enough of this "it was good, but TDK will be better!" Iron Man was good. Just say it.

I'm looking forward to TDK too, but it doesn't mean I have to bash every other movie.

Honestly,I don't think TDK will so called "Smoke It".I think that it will be pretty close.Ironman is just awesome and so is Batman.I guess it just remains to be seen though. All I know is that Marvel made one hell of a comeback with Ironman and a lot of die hard marvel fans are so ready for a comeback, they have been like a bomb ready to explode, considering some of the bad marvel movies that have been out.Plus,a very high percentage of people that have already seen Ironman are very hyped about it and are talking about going to see it again.Including myself,Batman Begins was bad ass also but not worth going to see twice.I can't say that about TDK cause I have only seen preveiws, but from what I can tell so far,it does not look like a two timer.Ironman just rocked. Now if only they can get the damn marketing of Hulk going.I thought I would see the green Hulkster on a preveiw before the movie, but they did not show it.That was the only disappointing experience I had tonight.

Amazing spidy first off I will say that Iron Man was good except after the credits that pissed me off. But that is besides the point. You are probably one of those hey Spider-Man is awesome. And hes not so just to throw this one out there The Dark Knight will be the best COMIC BOOK MOVIE EVER MADE! There I said it, can you?

And just a question?

WHY SO SERIOUS?

Seriously guys?? IRONMAN was awesome and the DARK KNIGHT will be awesome too, yes they are both comic book movies but tonally they are both 2 incredibly different movies and personally i think that sets them apart more than enough to say any comparison between the two is pointless.
