DreamWorks Pictures has acquired rights to the Japanese manga "Ghost in the Shell" with plans to adapt the futuristic police thriller as a 3-D live-action feature, reports Variety.

The story follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.

Created by Masamune Shirow, "Ghost in the Shell" was first published in 1989. It went on to generate two additional manga editions, three anime film adaptations, an anime TV series and three video games. The second anime film, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, was released in the U.S. by DreamWorks in 2004.

Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul of Seaside Entertainment are attached to produce and brought the project to the studio. Jamie Moss has been hired to write the adaptation.

"'Ghost in the Shell' is one of my favorite stories," Spielberg said. "It's a genre that has arrived, and we enthusiastically welcome it to DreamWorks."

DreamWorks president of production Adam Goodman said "Ghost in the Shell" is a property "that epitomizes 3-D live-action motion picture possibilities."

OK, heres the deal. Ghost in the shell is DAMN!!! GOOD!!. many feature films including the matrix has lifted action scenes straight from the anime.
Its seriously great animation and even better story telling. As Masamune Shirow works allways are. Now Dreamworks Had better do there homework on this one. It cant look low budget like shrek, and should niether be 'americanized' or altered just becuase the director feels like it. ala transformers. IF they follow IG's work it would be a success, if not and they water it down for 10 year olds, it will certainly flop!. They must treat Gits as an adult film not a cartoon. This is an ez one guys, follow the creators, not outa touch executives.

Gits is renowned for everything!, its masterfully produced. Top notch voice actors (which they should do there best to obtain for the film)((why go elswhere? no one knows the characters better than those thats done them from the start)
Seeking celebs will ruin it. Gits has fantastic animation keen understanding of future tech and the problems that exist. But more importantly, its all about great STORY and great characters. a great story executed with stick figures will still turn out to be great.
And again DONT!!! WATER IT DOWN FOR KIDS!!!
and get direction from production IG and Shirow along the way.

"Shrek looks low budget??" PDI/Dreamworks won't be touching this project, which created Shrek 2 and 3, multiple FX houses will be doing the 3D work. I agree with the adult film standpoint though. Give the project to Riddley Scott.

As for the idea that Dreamworks are to redo Ghost in the Shell.
STOP RIGHT THERE.
It’s perfect the way it is. The only way it could be made better would be to copy what’s been done before and put into a 3d universe complete with all the adult themes. Anything other than an R rating will dilute the movie to such a point that no fans of the series will dare sully their eyes with such a monstrosity.
So in other words don’t remake it. Leave it alone.

Anyone else think that Ron Pearlman as Bato and Rita Mitra as the Major would be decent casting??..Thats if they go with Western actors. It's all around great news, I just hope Spielberg doesn't direct or it will get the PG-13 kiss of death.

First off the movie is going to be made by Dreamworks Pictures which is a completely different from Dreamworks Animation (who made Shrek)...so more then likely they will use another CG effects house...just fyi

another great anime thats gonna be americanized.. sigh

but like i said bout everyone thats gonna be coming out.. like akira, db, etc...

1. dont not mess up the general theme.. these anime's are made for adults so they better keep it that way.. watering it down for younger crowd may destroy the movie.. and upset a lot of people..

2. do not fall far from the original story because only the people that never heard of the movie will like it or appreciate it. but most of the people that are gonna watch the movie are the true fans and if its far off of the original story the fans will just hate it..

all im really saying is that these directors and producers have to be very careful how they do this because its either gonna be a big hit or bad miss
