Alvin and the Chipmunks Tops Sweeney Todd

April 10, 2008

Fox Home Entertainment's Alvin and the Chipmunks topped the national DVD sales chart in its first week in stores, beating by a wide margin fellow newcomer Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street from DreamWorks/Paramount.

The animated comedy also managed to best "Sweeney" in rentals, topping Home Media Magazine's rental chart for the week ending April 6 with estimated revenue of $8.7 million to $8.1 million for the Johnny Depp musical.

"Alvin" raked in more than $215 million in U.S. theaters; "Sweeney" grossed $52.9 million.

Last week, Fox said consumers snapped up 2.6 million DVDs of "Alvin" on its first day in stores, the equivalent of about $45 million in spending.

Warner's I Am Legend, No. 1 on both charts the previous week, slipped to No. 3 on both. The actioner generated an additional $7.4 million in rentals to bring its take after three weeks to $27.5 million.

The top-selling Blu-ray Disc for the week also was "Alvin," with the previous week's topper, I Am Legend, falling to No. 2.

Ah! That is great news! I didn't like Alvin, but it's nice to see the over-rated Burton/Depp get a whoop'in by a CGI chipmunk.

I enjoyed Alvin & The Chipmunks more than any 27 year old man should ever enjoy it! It took me back to my childhood and was done VERY VERY well, I am a HUGE Jason Lee fan and thought he was a great Dave Seville although I heard there were many other choices prior to him that turned down the role including Chevy Chase & Bill Murray I couldn't imagine anyone else in the role. This is a must own on DVD for me and I can definitely see a sequel or two in the future I just hope they don't do "b" level sequels

Sweeney Todd is not overrated at all. This is by far the greatest musical in the last years, far grater than Evita or Chicago. Pitty it did not won the Academy Award for Best Picture. And even worse Johnny Depp did not won for Best Actor in Leading Role. Come on, this is stupid, Everyone can see he is the best actor nowadays. GO JOHNNY GO!!!!

Im 32 years old and used to watch the cartoon everyday after school when I was young. I have to admit that I didnt want to see Alvin & the Chipmunks movie cuz I thought it looked too cheesy. But since I have 2 youngs kids, I was forced to take them. That movie brought me back to my childhood more than Transformers. the movie was great and I will be buying the DVD this weekend.

i'm 53 years old and loved alvin and the chipmunks. it reminded me of my younger days when i would come home from school, watch alvin, get out a dirty magazine and fantasize about the three chipmunks gettin me off. damn those were good times.

i don't have any kids to take to the movies but i did sit with some kids there and they were scared the whole time. after a while their parents made them move and leave me alone. i thought the chipmunks looked really cute in 3d, especially the tall one.

im gonna buy the dvd when i see it, as long as i have some money left over from all the pornography i purchased last weekend

these are just a few words from steven

I'm sorry but Tim Burton is way overrated - and compairing it to Evita doesn't help your cause. Johnny Deep the best actor ever? Laughable.

But hey it's your opinion and this ones mine.

How is Tim Burton overrated? Compare him to 90% of the modern directors out there, and he is better than all of them.

I would say he is underrated. He never gets Oscar nods, and people dislike him because he is a pop art king.
