Dimension Films has acquired rights to remake the 1986 film, Short Circuit, reports Variety.

The original introduced Number 5, a robot built by the military to be a highly sophisticated weapon. It developed a conscience and a personality after being hit by lightning, and then needed the help of humans after it was targeted for destruction by its makers, once it became a peacenik.

S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock, who created the characters and wrote both "Short Circuit" films, have been hired to write the remake.

David Foster and Ryan E. Heppe will produce with John Hyde.

The original was great for the time. I dont know how they are gonna top the original (or even the sequal as ok as it was). I STILL enjoy the original

At least its being written by the same writer, he can go back and think about everything he wishes he put in it all those years ago. It isn't like someone else is coming in and butchering it.

I'm agreeing with Sean on this one. You always hear about writers saying they wished they could've this and that, maybe this is their chance. Im sure as technology advanced they were like "****, that would've been cool and come in handy."

The fact that it's the same guy gives me hope. And if it's good and we get a sequel/new short circuit story, i'd be happy with that too.

as for having a problem with sequels.. that that I ask WHY????? If you love a character, and there's more story to tell, more development, why not keep going through their lives with them? That's how I see it, anyway. Or in the case of something like Jurassic Park, **** yeah i wanna see more dinosaurs.

Being a film maker, this film was an important aspect of my childhood. I've seen this movie more times than I can even count...yet...I don't know what to think of this news...

Forget a remake, bring on Short Circuit 3!!! While they're at it, bring Steve and Alley back as well. Maybe Johnny 5 is collecting dust somewhere with no battery, someone gives him one, and he's on his way!! Number 5 has no since of time nor does he understand the concept of time, so to him it's 1988 still, and he's once again on a search to find Steve and Alley!! Only when he finds them, he also finds them aged. Maybe Steve and Alley haven't seen each other in years, and he brings them back together. Make it about life's many many journeys...
