Exclusive: The 3D Explosion!

This is going to be a different type of feature than CS readers may be used to reading here, one that came out of our time spent at ShoWest where we were astounded by the number of times "3D" was mentioned, and being blown away by the use of 3D technology in presentations by DreamWorks, as well as New Line and Walden Media's Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D, which we saw in its entirety. (You can read our Journey 3D Preview here).

The 3D phenomenon isn't just something being discussed in theory at trade shows like ShoWest, since its practical uses have already had an impact with moviegoers. Last year, Robert Zemeckis' animated epic Beowulf made much from its money from the theaters that were able to screen it in 3D, because there were a lot of moviegoers who wanted to see the adventure in that format and were ready to pay more money to do so. This year, there have already been 3D concert films from two of the biggest touring acts, with Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: The Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour setting a new per-theater average record when it opened in early February. James Cameron's next movie Avatar, his first dramatic feature since Titanic over ten years ago scheduled for release in December 2009, is being filmed entirely using similar 3D technology as "Journey."

Instead of talking to the man on the street to get their opinion on the growing 3D phenomenon, ComingSoon.net had a chance to talk to two men who have the most to gain (as well as the most to lose) from the 3D explosion, the CEOs of two major companies that have been pioneering the use of 3D technology both in production and theater projection.

Cary Granat is the Co-founder and CEO of Walden Media, the production company who has optioned the rights to many popular novels to turn them into successful films like The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, Bridge to Terabithia and Disney's Holes starring Shia LaBeouf, but Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D is the first live action dramatic feature to use the newest 3D technology.

Michael Lewis is the Co-founder, Chairman and CEO of Real D, the company who has devised the software and hardware technology that allow digital cinema projectors to project 3D images onto regular movie theater screens. If you've seen a 3D movie anytime in the last couple of years, you're probably already familiar with the "Real D" logo emblazoned on those nifty 3D glasses.

Why don't they make DVDs with the same technology? There's no fundamental reason why not... Beowulf in 3D was amazing, I wish they made a 3D version of the DVD?

3D stinks

What a gimmick! I watched Beowulf in 3d and all I got was a colossal headache. All those fake looking people looking three times as bad. Should be avoided like the plague. A schlock gimmick in the 50s and it still is. Filmmakers need to stop with this and focus on what's REALLY important, like telling a good story! Zemekis made some of the most fun movies ever in the 80s, but now he's become such a technology whore his movies not only have crummy stories, they look atrocious as well. I cringe to think of the upcoming Tintin movies.

I agree with you, STINKS. Though it's not really big news yet, the SOULCALIBUR movie was what I've been waiting on. It's seen little movement over the past several years, but I think its finally being made (speculated), and though all these people say it'd be cool to see in 3D, I say 'Is there anything wrong with good ol' fashion movies?' Could you imagine if the DARK KNIGHT was going to be made like that? -Just wouldn't work as well, right?

Tech sucks

Yeah! Tech sucks. I wish we would go back to the old days of plays when they could focus on the story and not get so bogged down with technology.

Film, a bad gimick in the 20's and it still is.

Guys if you don't like 3D then just go to see the movies in 2D.
Let the people that enjoy it enjoy it.
This is the direction that film is going in. You can't stop it so you might as well not complain about it.

The technology to make real 3-D presented on TV sets it way, way, way to expensive at this point in time, and will probably take years before it will even be cost effective to do so. It's a different type of technology presenting films in 3D in theaters than on TV. That's why movies filmed in 3D, such as 'Beowulf,' 'Jaws 3-D' etc are presented and sold on VHS, DVD and TV in 2D.

Other movies that have thrown in 3D glasses with the DVD, like Spy Kids 3-D, Night of the Living Dead 3D and Sharkboy and Lava Girl, are not presented/projected on your TV in real 3-D.

I doubt they'll bother to try and bring effective 3D tech to DVDs and hi-def format releases as the whole point of bringing in 3D again is to get people to start giong to the movie theatres once more. That's the real reason I suspect there is a move to bring back the gimmick, to offer you something you can't download or watch on your telly at home.

Why shouldn't they have something to sell the consumer that can't be pirated? The ONLY reason I saw the last Harry Potter movie is because it was available for viewing in IMAX 3D. Up until that point I'd only seen the first one due to better things to do.

Yes, it is true that a SMALL percentage of people may experience headaches and/or nausea
while watching a 3D movie. It's probably due to a biological factor as opposed to an old theory that accredited it to a lack of mental capacity. Although... from the postings I've read from the Anti-3D factions, I gotta wonder if there might be some truth in the old theory.

For the rest of us, it's a great incentive to visit the theatre. The scenes in the IMAX Superman Returns that were done in 3D were AWESOME! I wish that all summer blockbusters were 3D. Spiderman would have been a good choice. The last three Star Wars would have been great too. I guess I can only dream of what would have been.

Oh, by the way "tech sucks", it was the 50's not the 20's. Try a history book as opposed to the picture books you've obviously going blind on. Didn't your mother warn you against that?

So, BITE IT Anti 3D-er's!!!
