The Weinstein Company announced its plans for Fanboys on Monday:

The Weinstein Company announced today that it plans to jointly release two versions of its highly anticipated film, "Fanboys," on home video, with the Company exploring options for its theatrical release. In recent weeks, Star Wars fans nationwide have built a multi-tiered grassroots effort to voice their strong support for one of the earlier versions of the film, including a campaign which generated over 300,000 emails in support for the film. Based on the tremendous feedback and interest from the fans, today's announcement will ensure both versions will be equally available within the marketplace.

Set in 1998, the film, starring Jay Baruchel ("Million Dollar Baby"), Tony Award Winner Dan Fogler (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”), Sam Huntington ("Superman Returns"), Chris Marquette ("Sugar Mountain," "Joan of Arcadia"), and Kristen Bell ("Veronica Mars," "Pulse") is a heart warming comedy of a group of young, passionate Star Wars fans, drive cross-country to raid George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch, and watch "Star Wars: Episode 1- The Phantom Menace."

"Over the last few weeks we have received a tremendous amount of input from Star Wars fans nationwide," stated Matthew Frankel, Chief Communications Officer, The Weinstein Company. "While the later version tested very well with audiences, the grassroots support we have received for the first version simply cannot be ignored. We are very excited to launch these two films and look forward to giving the fans the opportunity to see both versions.”

"Fanboys" is a production of Trigger Street and Picture Machine. Jay Baruchel plays the role of Windows, a junk food addict who's dedicated his 150 IQ to a worthy cause: comic books. His nickname was inspired by his titanic window-like glasses. Dan Fogler plays Hutch, a guy who is a force to be reckoned with, a hot-head overflowing with piss and vinegar. Sam Huntington plays Eric, a guy who's all business. He's usually in a pressed suit and glued to his huge cell phone. Chris Marquette plays Linus, a boyishly handsome, extremely charming young man. But looks can be deceiving as this dude's a geek and proud of it! Kristen Bell plays Zoe, a sexy firecracker with a great sense of humor.

The film is directed by Kyle Newman and produced by Kevin Spacey, Dana Brunetti, Evan Astrowsky and Matthew Perniciaro. The script was written by Kyle Newman, Adam Goldberg and Ernest Cline and Kevin Mann serves as executive producer.

They should release both versions together on a two-disk set. Having separate releases is completely stupid, especially for a movie that's probably not going to be the blockbuster people tend to make it out to be.

I was really looking forward to seeing this movie in theaters. I am glad I might finally at least get to see it.

Okay, quick question... WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? The article makes no distinction between the two versions of the film! What, was one of them too inflammatory of Episode One for Lucas to handle or something? SOMEBODY FILL ME IN!

The differents revolves around the whole reason the group goes to break in a watch the first print of Ep.I- the original story was set around one of the friends having cancer and limited time to live- they want him to see the film before he dies- the later version removes the whole cancer plot completely-

I have been following this film for a while- and I knew the response was negative to the later version- but had no idea it had reached this size-

i agree with yodaman- they should have just put both versions on a 2-disc- but maybe they are testing the water to see what does better- if i had to take a guess- the original version will do best because really only star wars fans know about this film and me including only support the original cut

I want a theatrical release but I guess a DVD is better than waiting another two frickin' years to see the dang thing.

Ive been waiting for years to see this. Removing the cancer plot removes the heart. It simply becomes another nerdy road trip movie. While the movie SHOULD be released on a 2-disc, the company has to recoup some of it's losses and releasing 2 version will help in that aspect. Remember, movies are still a business. And money is the driving force. Be happy this is even coming out at all it could easily have been shelved. It isnt a money maker since it will most likely be direct to DVD or have a severely limited theatrical run. THough the studio will most likely forego that in an effort to cut promotional costs. At this stage, with so many delays, this really is the only SENSIBLE way to go.

well it was delayed because all of the buzz for this movie the studio gave more money and they decided to shoot more scenes. I like the caner story line makes the movie have more of a driving force. But people today are dumb and want a dumb movie so thats why they are cuting the caner plot out its sad really. But this article doesint explain if and when its coming to theaters I think if they just skip the theater all together and do a dvd rellease sales would be amazing and think if 300 thousand people wrote in about this movie think of how many will simply want to just see it. This movie almost sets a recored for beginning and ending of filming 3 years now.
