Director Anthony Minghella, Dead at 54

March 18, 2008

The Associated Press is reporting that filmmaker Anthony Minghella, who won an Oscar for his 1996 film The English Patient, has passed away at 54.

"Anthony Minghella died this morning at Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith, west London," Minghella's spokesman said in a statement. "He was operated on last week for a growth in his neck, and the operation seemed to have gone well. At 5 a.m. today he had a fatal hemorrhage."

The prestigious director known for films like The Talented Mr. Ripley, Cold Mountain and most recently, Breaking and Entering, all with Jude Law, was recently filming an adaptation of Alexander McCall Smith's "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" and was scheduled to shoot a segment for the anthology New York, I Love You.

The English Patient is a masterpiece and one of the few films of recent years that truly deserved the Best Picture Oscar.

What a shame, I loved Cold Mountain. It's sad to see such a creative person with so much more to say and do leave with a life unfinished.

What is going on with so many dying so young?! Mr. Minghella was a wonderful writer and an incredible director. THE ENGLISH PATIENT was, as stated above, one of the last films to actually deserve "Best Picture." I study the script whenever I have a chance.

Bets wishes and hopes to the Minghella family.

English patient is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. To me it's worse then Deuce Bigalow European Gigalo. The other movies are good and it's sad that he's gone.
