EXCL: Kurt Wimmer Adapting Metal Gear Solid?

On the red carpet for Sony's upcoming Vegas crime caper 21, appropriately held at Vegas' Planet Hollywood Casino, ComingSoon.net had a few minutes to chat with the film's producer Michael De Luca--who mentioned that he was a fan of the site--and we talked with him about his new movie plus a few of his projects in the works.

There have been a lot of video game movies in recent years of varying qualities, but one game that seems almost perfectly suited for the cinema experience is Konami's "Metal Gear Solid" and now that the writers strike is over, De Luca and Columbia Pictures can get back in gear (ha ha) and move forward with bringing the game to the big screen.

A few years ago, when Kurt Wimmer's action sci-fi flick Equilibrium came out, fans of the video game were clamoring for him to direct a movie based on the video game, and at the red carpet, De Luca told ComingSoon.net that they hope to meet with Wimmer in the next few weeks to talk about him writing the script (and presumably directing), so hopefully there'll be an announcement and more development with this project soon.

21 opens on March 28 and you can read more with De Luca and the entire cast right here on ComingSoon.net in the coming weeks.

First.(Had to say it just once.)

This'll be interesting. I'm kinda hoping all the techno babbel in the games won't be in it. I know that's importatn but in a way it does sorta distract from the overall game play when someone he's talking to suddenly just goes out explaining entire history that's drawn out in a game. Still if they do this right they'll have an action epic on their hands.

This would be awesome, I would just want the guy that played Dilios oin 300 to play Solid Snake! Look at him in 300 and heis perfect, voice and everything.

Oh hell no. Please, please, PLEASE keep Kurt Wimmer away from this project. God I hope Kojima has control over this project. You like 'Equilibrium' ? Fine, whatever, it was alright, I'll admit it...but, but BUT that is in no way an excuse for the steaming POS 'film' that Wimmer gave us by the name of 'Ultraviolet.' That alone should send shivers down the spines of all Metal Gear fans across the globe.

If any game could be a blockbuster movie, it's this one. The only tricky part will be trimming down some of the talkier points in the game and getting the action done right. It's a stealth game, so I hope we don't see a lot of shoot em up action outside the boss fights. I can't wait to see the Snowfield sniper battle on screen.

Kojima DOES have control of the project, and unlike the many other directors that pleaded with Kojima, Wimmer didn't get the finger and his ass kicked. I still love when he said "F NO!!!!!!!!!!" to Uwe Boll's request.

Oh hell no!! Well, if he can make it cool like Equilibrium, then fine, I'm okay with that. However, his last film, Ultraviolet was one of, if not, the WORST movie I have ever seen......EVER!!!!!

I really cannot wait for this to be made into movie. I've been scouring the internet for news of possible progress for the past several years. When they announced that they were going to make it a while back I was thrilled. It's just taken so long for any updates. Finally something to hope with.

maybe Hollywood should just leave this game to where it belongs...on the consoles. Why not just let it be a video game and not make it into a giant blockbuster movie. I love Metal Gear, I've been playing it since nintendo...Kojima knows what the right thing to do is...I just hope he picks the choice this time around.
