Warner Bros. Picks Up Bone Comic

March 8, 2008

Warner Bros. has picked up the rights to "Bone," the acclaimed independent comic book series from artist Jeff Smith, says The Hollywood Reporter. Dan Lin will produce.

The fantasy series followed three cousins from the Bone family who are small, white and bald humanlike creatures with big noses. The trio are run out of their hometown and find themselves in a mysterious valley where they are separated and hunted by other creatures. They are taken in by a girl named Thorn and her grandmother, and find out that the valley is threatened by an evil force called the Lord of the Locusts.

The series ran irregularly from 1991-2004. Scholastic has been publishing the collected stories in graphic novel format since 2005, selling more than 1 million copies so far.

A decision on what kind of format "Bone" should take -- live-action or animated or both -- will be based on filmmaker meetings.

An animated version was in development at Nickelodeon Films but fell through, partly because Smith was displeased that the studio was aiming it for kids and wanted the film to include pop songs.

Visit the official "Bone" website for more info.

Sounds like a book to movie idea that probably should have stayed as a book.

This could be good. Jeff Smith is fearlessly protective of Bone, so I'm sure he won't allow a ****ty adaptation. I remember when the Nick deal fell through. I was really impressed that he didn't just sell out and let them release a piece of ****. They should go the CG route though. Complete. Not live action with CG Bones. The art style is so distinct that I don't think live action versions of Thorn, Grandma and Lucius would look right. And it should definetly be a trilogy. There is far too much story for them to pack into one movie.

I guess this could be pretty awesome. Kris made a good point for full on CG. Don't think a CG Bones with live action people would look right. I just want to finish the books before it comes out!

Anthony - you should pick up the One Volume edition. Every single issue in one massive softbound edition. It's great.

Me, I think that Bone should be live action with CG - I don't think that it should look exactly like the comic book. Why bother making it into a movie if it's going to look exactly the same? Otherwise, I agree with Kris; I think that given Smith's militancy regarding his creation, it can't help but being a great movie!

I am so excited for this. I used to read Bone in the Disney Adventures comic section.

I say animated, preferably 2D but since no one does that anymore CG would work too. It would fit the stories much better IMHO.

Animated all the way!! I can't imagine anyone playing Granma Ben. Please let this be an animated feature.
