Hugo Weaving will join Benicio Del Toro and Emily Blunt in Universal's The Wolfman, reports Variety.

Weaving ("The Matrix" and "The Lord of the Rings" trilogies) will play Det. Aberline. Del Toro will play the hirsute title character and Anthony Hopkins his dad. Blunt has been cast as the female lead in the project, which Joe Johnston will direct.

Filming begins next month in London.

David Self did a rewrite of Andrew Kevin Walker's script. The movie is produced by Scott Stuber, Mary Parent, Sean Daniel and Rick Yorn.

Universal has set a February 13, 2009 release date for the pic.

Andrew Kevin Walker's script was greenlit as an R rated movie which Universal signed on to with a $100 million budget. I really hope this rewrite wasn't meant to tone it down to a PG-13 because Universal might be getting nervous of OKing a $100 million horror film.

I really wish this was Romanek's One Hour Photo follow-up, rather than the movie Joe Johnston's movie after Hidalgo...

Universal is kinda 1 for 2 on classic monster relaunches, doing a great job with The Mummy but not so much with Van Helsing. If The Wolfman does real well, we might start seeing a plethora of Universal monsters, starting with the Creature From the Black Lagoon.
