Gains on Wrapping the Watchmen Filming

The official website for director Zack Snyder's Watchmen adaptation has been updated with a cool new entry by executive producer Herb Gains:

As we approach the last days of shooting Watchmen -- yes, the end is nigh -- it's time to reflect on the whole Watchmen experience. I think back to January 2007 when I first met Zack and he walked me through his drawings for the title sequence. I remember my initial reaction was, How can we shoot all of it? Why do we have to shoot all that? And if we do, how do we shoot all of it? We spent the next two months scouting, researching and budgeting locations all over the world, including Australia, London, Prague, Spain -- at one point we even considered New York -- and, of course, Los Angeles.

I now sit in my Vancouver hotel room one year later, and guess what? We did shoot all of it -- every frame of it, and not just the title sequence drawings but all of Zack's drawings are now committed to film. The combination of modern-day technology and the level of artistic ability of so many people has made the Watchmen experience second to none. The spirit behind the making of this film was nothing short of total pleasure and love. As I wandered from room to room at the wrap party, there was not only a sense of accomplishment from everyone involved but a feeling of sadness that it's coming to an end. The one thing that remains for me is the anticipation and excitement of seeing the finished product, knowing that we've all worked on something very special.

Thank you Zack, for allowing me to be a part of it.

Warner Bros. Pictures will release the film, starring Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Matthew Goode, Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Malin Akerman, Carla Gugino, Stephen McHattie and Matt Frewer, on March 6, 2009.

I am excited. I have extreme faith in this movie topping all previous comic adaptations and setting a new bar for future adaptations to reach.

Don't get your hopes up too high. Snyder didn't do that fantastic a job with 300. The story sucked and all he did was put it on screen verbatim by the book and not use creative decisions to make it a better piece of film like Rodriguez and Miller did with Sin City.

Until I see a trailer for this my expectations are very low, however, some pictures I have seen look cool but I'm not holding my breath till I see a trailer.

Thank you Calum for saying what I've long been thinking. "300" was visually arresting and had some nice skullful scenery-chewing by Gerard Butler ("THIS IS SPARTA") but in all other respects was mediocre and has been IMO in ridiculusly overrated.

"Watchmen" is a property (graphic novel or film) I grow less interested in the more I hear people rhapzidize about it. Yes I have tried reading it while I respect the skill went into it and the status it holds in the hearts of my fellow comic affectionados, as a story it left me cold.

So we have a filmmaker I'm growing to dislike and an adaption of a property I have next to no interest in so unless I'm wowed by the trailer and/or the early reviews, I'm going to happily give this one a pass.

Obviously you're not excited, but you two make it seem like its going to be a bad movie. Just because Calum and Troy do not care for the propert or director in no way reflects the quality of the film. Also you say "Snyder didn't do that fantastic a job with 300. The story sucked and all he did was put it on screen verbatim by the book and not use creative decisions to make it a better piece of film like Rodriguez and Miller did with Sin City." Many purists would call that a dumb statement. Clearly you had a problem with the source material if it was taken "verbatim" and you still didn't enjoy it.

Oh please please please stick to the source material. Work the good stuff on it. Bring it to life but don't change anything in the story!

I'm counting on this one. I believe in Zak.

I have absolutely zero faith in this movie. Snyder will ride the success of 300 throughout this entire process, but the characterization & complexity of the book is going to fly way over his head. There's a reason why it wasn't made time and time again throughout the years.

there's no way that sin city the film is better than sin city the comics. and as for characterization and things of that nature are concerned, about 80 percent of that is up to the actors. it's a shame that directors bear such vast responsibility in the eyes of the public. sure, they get all the praise if the film is good and successful, but conversely, if the film fails, they get all the blame. there are hundreds of people involved in making big-budget films. why not credit/blame all of them?
