Emilio Estevez Goes Public

February 5, 2008

Emilio Estevez is preparing The Public, a social drama set in a public library that he wrote and will direct as his follow-up to Bobby.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story is loosely based on a Los Angeles Times op-ed piece written by Chip Ward, a retiring librarian in Salt Lake City, which discussed the epidemic issue of libraries becoming de facto shelters for the homeless and the mentally ill in light of many social program cuts.

The story, set in Los Angeles, takes place during a 48-hour period on the two coldest days in the city, with the library overwhelmed by people seeking shelter. After getting rebuffed by the administration to keep the doors open, one librarian stages an act of civil disobedience. He ends up dealing with the library's new inhabitants, many of them mentally ill.

Estevez wrote through the summer and fall. He is meeting with actors for the 16-character ensemble and eyeing a March 26 start date in Los Angeles.

I have thought of a library as a place to sneak a kiss or something more in...find a great read or a man/women whom shares the same interest... I have not seen the problems of sharing the library with the homeless...(besides, there is no hot coffee) is this a documentry or a fiction? I might ad, that in the days of such abundant youth... telling a story of an intense secrete relationship in a library might sell more to the public then, scaring off the public knowing freaky mindless homeless people are hiding in the depths of our favorite isles. Libraries depend on funding from the state & the public... if we scare them off, then where does the money come from? I dont mean to be mean but, homeless living in the library just might not cut it.

I'm a librarian and pretty much every library I've worked in has had an issue with homeless spending the entire day in the library. It's a rampant problem that needs to be addressed. They have no where else to go.

I can't wait to see a new Emilio Estevez film. It doesn't matter what the story line is about, everything the man does is great. I hope that he plans on acting, as well as directing this project. It has been way to long between Estevez movies, and this fan misses watching the wonderful creative natural ability of Emilio Estevez.
