Although the actor became set to headline the project earlier this year, The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Gerard Butler has dropped out of director Ericson Core's Point Break remake. He was to play Bodhi, the late Patrick Swayze's character in the original.
Alcon Entertainment is developing the remake of Kathryn Bigelow's 1991 action thriller. The new version of the film is set in the world of international extreme sports, and like the original involves an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring.
No official reason has been given for Butler's departure, but he does have a busy upcoming slate. He'll reprise his Olympus Has Fallen role for the upcoming sequel, London Has Fallen and has plans to team with director Dean Devlin for the sci-fi actioner Geostorm.
A replacement for the Bodhi role is expected to be announced shortly.
Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson are producing Point Break along with Michael DeLuca, John Baldecchi, Chris Taylor and Kurt Wimmer, who also wrote the screenplay. RGM Media principal Devesh Chetty and investor John McMurrick, Chairman of Marloss Entertainment, will serve as executive producers.
